Netflix’s BoJack Horseman is one of the most groundbreaking animated series of all time. Its complex and in-depth understanding of mental health conditions and the psychology of characters delivered with smart yet goofy humor make it one of the most interesting pieces to enjoy and learn from.

Another Netflix gem is the comic-book-based Umbrella Academy, an off-kilter Watchmen-like statement on the psychological weight superheroism has on the ego and how the group was abused as children by their rich adopted father. Not only are there parental issues to go around in both series, but the characters are fascinating as well. They can be compared to each other in their roles, personalities, or otherwise.

10 Sarah Lynn – Lila Pitts

Former child actress and co-star with BoJack on Horsin’ Around, Sarah Lynn became the poster child for actresses with a destructive nature due to their early fame. In actuality, she’s intelligent, talented, and can be friendly, but also acts recklessly or out of self-hatred.

Lila is the adopted daughter of the head of a time-traveling agency after 5. She also has superpowers and, despite her charisma and spunk, is on a deceitful and violent path. Both need validation in that they are loved and cared for rather than omitted and regarded as objects.

9 Charlotte Carson – Mom (Grace)

Charlotte’s loving and caring nature is what stands out as her role of a love interest for BoJack, which makes it so much sadder when BoJack ruins the chance at them having a friendship by severing their relationship forever.

Mom, a realistic robot built to raise the Umbrella Academy, was also based on a kind and gentle woman who Sir Hargreeves saw as a love interest and had her memorialized as the house’s wife and mother figure.

8 Kelsey Jannings – Number Five

Kelsey’s intelligent yet cold demeanor solidifies her as a director and a leader for BoJack. She’s straightforward and runs with whatever resources she’s got.

Number Five acts, in the same way, frank and taking no funny-business for the sake of whatever end-goal he has in sight, which, unlike directing, is usually saving the world. Both are hyper-focused, and über determined whenever inspiration strikes or rising to the occasion is necessary.

7 Judah Mannowdog – Ben Hargreeves

Princess Carolyn’s trustworthy and thorough assistant is the most impeccably organized and reliable employee of all time. While he has a sense of humor, he’s also incredibly pointed, aware, and independent.

He’s always there when he is needed, just like Ben Hargreeves, who can only be summoned by Klaus since he’s dead, and Klaus so happens to be able to talk to the dead. Ben has abilities as a ghost and can see whatever it is needs to be seen for the benefit of others.

6 Todd Chavez – Klaus Hargreeves

Everyone’s favorite younger brother figure, Todd is the heart and humor of every scene he’s in. Usually naive, scatterbrained, and lost yet awesomely talented, Todd usually explores different factions and careers and takes on different roles.

While they’re very different, Klaus is similar in that everyone also underestimates him due to his selfish recklessness and naivety, but he’s always the most fun person in the room.

5 Butterscotch Horseman – Sir Reginald Hargreeves

The best dads in the world–are what Butterscotch and Hargreeves aren’t. Both are devastatingly self-centered, placing more importance on their “causes” than their own families. Hargreeves groomed an entire group of children into being superheroes, literally risking their lives.

Meanwhile, Butterscotch was massively abusive to BoJack, both physically and verbally. Both men (or man and horse) are guilty of mentally torturing their children, resulting in them at times being almost fatally dysfunctional.

4 Mr. Peanutbutter – Luther Hargreeves

Mr. Peanutbutter is a good dog, but he’s not always a good man. He can underestimate and patronize others without even realizing it, a figurehead of being a “manchild.” Though he always means well, loves the people he cares about, and is usually able to maintain positive relationships even with his begrudging exes, he is also guilty of gaslighting and short siding people, putting his own needs and interests above their own.

Luther does the same, especially when Allison is involved. He gets obsessed with “protecting” people and makes decisions that not everyone always agrees with. Because he was previously called “Number 1” and stayed with Sir Hargreeves the longest, he takes on the role of leader, a role of which he ultimately abuses and does not understand.

3 Princess Carolyn – Allison Hargreeves

Articulate, punctual, and a firm communicator, Princess Carolyn always takes on more than she can chew. Like the savvy talent agent, Allison also has taken on the entertainment industry.

Though it’s Allison’s power to influence people, she legitimately tries to get people to communicate and only uses her power if she absolutely needs it. She’s very loyal to the people she loves and often takes on a more maternal role amongst the siblings, forcing them to communicate to work out their problems, much like Princess Carolyn does.

2 Diane Nguyen – Vanya Hargreeves

Diane is underestimated and misunderstood. Much like Vanya, who is left behind because of her incredible power, Diane is often left behind because of her incredible observation skills, pragmatism, and intelligence.

While both have been shown to be overcompensating for often being lent the short end of the stick, they both are also capable of great love and care for those whom they feel sympathize with them.

1 BoJack Horseman – Diego Hargreeves

Hardheaded, reckless, self-destructive, and impulsive describes both of these characters. While they both get the sense that they’re serving a larger purpose, Diego in fighting evil and BoJack in dealing with his existentialism and overall idiocracy, their egos often get in the way of what’s really important.

They have no trouble making connections or friends but can abuse those relationships in what are cataclysmic consequences.
