It’s October, which for many is a month-long celebration of Halloween. People may not be dressing up in costumes every day of the month, but the urge to binge-watch horror films and Halloween specials ramps up the anticipation for the day itself.

Many enjoy the scares, while others prefer something more lighthearted. People who fall into either category will derive enjoyment from these excellent Halloween episodes.

10 Bob’s Burgers – “Full Bars” (S3E2)

This is the first of the annual Bob’s Burgers Halloween episodes, and it’s still arguably the best. The Belcher kids go trick-or-treating in a wealthy neighborhood, but run into trouble when some older kids begin bullying them.

Meanwhile, Bob and Linda attend a Halloween party that turns into a murder mystery centered around the mysterious death of a very old hamster. The episode is full of jokes that hit from beginning to end (such as Tina observing teenage boys skinny-dipping and remarking “There’s a lot of carrots in that stew”).

9 Bob’s Burgers – “The Hauntening” (S6E3)

Louise doesn’t want to go to a haunted house with her parents, stating that they aren’t scary enough. Bob and Linda set up their own haunted house for their kids, which is met with disappointing reactions. A strange man is spotted across the street, and suddenly all sorts of scary things are happening, including a ring of fire and three hooded figures surrounding the house. Louise is properly frightened, and the rest of the Belcher’s reveal that they were in on the plan from the start.

8 Brooklyn Nine-Nine – “HalloVeen” (S5E4)

Not only is Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s fifth Halloween episode just as funny as the four before, but this episode gives fans a lovely emotional climax when Jake finally proposes to Amy. Everyone is in on the heist this year, with Terry, Rosa, and Charles teaming up as “The Tramps” (a name Charles insists on), and Holt bringing in the big guns (Cheddar). Any episode that includes Cheddar immediately gets a boost.

7 Community – “Epidemiology” (S2E6)

The Dean uses Halloween as an excuse to throw a party, and he goes to an army surplus store for the food. When students who eat the mysterious “taco meat” start acting like zombies, even infecting other students through bites, Rick alerts the study group that the infected could die from the strange illness. The solution is to lower the temperature on the thermostat, but whoever does it has to fight through basically the entire student body, all of whom are infected by this point. It sounds like the pretty straightforward plot of a horror movie, but exploring humor through any and every genre is one of the things that Community does best.

6 Community – “Horror Fiction In Seven Spooky Steps” (S3E5)

When the psych tests Britta administers to the study group comes back showing that one member of the group may have psychopathic tendencies, she freaks out and makes everyone tell scary stories in order to determine whose responses produced the result.

Annie tells a story about falling for a sexy, illiterate vampire, which turns shockingly, hilariously violent. Shirley’s story is predictably preachy, and Pierce’s predictably pervy. Troy tells a story about gluing Pierce’s butt to his chest, and Abed tells a very practical tale. All of this is meaningless when they discover that Britta ran the tests through the machine upside down. She Britta-ed it.

5 Friends – “The One With The Halloween Party” (S8E6)

A cranky Chandler in a bright pink bunny suit is still a pretty funny sight (Chandler’s tired issues surrounding his ideas about masculinity, however, are not). Ross’ costume is as goofy and nerdy as you’d expect, as he’s dressed as a potato, based on a play on words that requires a bit too much explanation. Phoebe’s twin sister comes to Monica’s Halloween party with her fiancé, who Phoebe finds out is lying to about who she really is. Rachel goes broke trying to get children to like her, and Chandler and Ross engage in the world’s saddest arm-wrestling match.

4 Parks and Recreation – “Meet ‘N’ Greet” (S4E5)

The main plot of this episode has nothing to do with Halloween, and yet this episode of Parks and Recreation is still the best Halloween episode of the series. The B plot consists of Andy and April throwing a Halloween party, which irritates Ben. His passive-aggressive way of dealing with his frustration irritates Andy, who carries him around in a chokehold as a means of forcing him to express his feelings. Ron is appalled at the state of Andy and April’s place, and takes it upon himself to fix up their place, letting Ann shadow him.

3 Stranger Things – “Trick Or Treat, Freak” (S2E2)

It was very exciting to learn that Stranger Things would have a Halloween episode, as the show is perfectly suited for scares. Season two is Will’s chance to shine, and Noah Schnapp does a wonderful job portraying the character’s PTSD after his stint in the Upside Down. The episode balances this heavier topic with lighter fare. Watching the kids dress up in their coordinated outfits while their parents embarrass them with picture taking is really sweet.

2 The Office – “Halloween” (S2E5)

The overarching plot that Michael must choose an employee to fire finally comes to a head in this episode. This results in Michael choosing to fire Creed, who talks him into firing Devon instead. In one of Michael’s more cringe-worthy moves, he tries to ensure that Devon won’t be upset with him.

We learn that Jim is one of those people who put minimal effort into their costumes, as opposed to Dwight, who really goes all in. This is another example of the first Halloween special being the best. Even though the series followed up with plenty of other memorable entries, nothing tops the first one.

1 The Simpsons – “Treehouse of Horror IV” (S5E5)

Ned Flanders is Satan, Homer is a donut, and Bart is followed by a little gremlin creature only he can see. At this point, there have been so many Treehouse of Horror episodes, but this one is still arguably the best. The Simpsons has set a high bar for Halloween television episodes, with its perfect blend of horror, comedy, and moments that make sense with what we know about the characters.
