One of the most surprisingly lucrative aspects of the well-known Pokémon franchise, which has spanned over 20 years, is the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Enthusiasts and collectors alike have seen some of their favorite Pokémon cards from their youth sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Though certain cards have seen a consistent rise in value through private and public auctions over the years, some have increased in popularity. Many of the rarest and most expensive cards originated from Pokémon tournaments; however, collectors may be surprised by some of the cards that have sold for exorbitant sums in recent years.

In 2005, Japan hosted the Battle Road Summer tournaments across nine Japanese Cities. The top three participants from each division were awarded a tournament exclusive, the Victory Orb card, depicting a Mew illustrated by Takumi Akabane.

There are an estimated 162 Victory Orb cards available, with even fewer rated as mint condition. Most recently, a copy sold for $15,350 in June 2020. It’s worth noting that there is also a 2003-2004 edition, which does not feature Mew, and is worth considerably less.

Those who completed the first series of tests were invited to a conference in Osaka, where they competed in Pokémon card battles separated by age group. Winners were ultimately awarded the University Magikarp card, one of which recently sold for a whopping $50,100 in October 2020.

The Ishihara GX promo card was given out by Tsunekazu Ishihara, president of the Pokémon company, to his employees in celebration of his 60th birthday back in 2018. Exclusively released as a promotional card, there are rumored to be only 30-60 copies available. The lucky employees at the time were also told not to sell the card, making it an undoubtedly rare collector’s item.

In April 2020, a mint copy of the card was sold on eBay for $50,500. Based on the remarkable selling price, it would be of little surprise if more copies began to circulate on public auction.

Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game are undoubtedly familiar with the Pokemon Tropical Mega Battle, which took place from 1999 to 2001 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The tournament, which took the best players from multiple countries, was an invitation-only event that awarded participants with a limited eight card set, including Tropical Wind.

Tropical Wind cards in mint condition are particularly uncommon, with only two Gem Mint 10 rated cards in existence. In October 2020, a mint Tropical Wind sold for $65,100 on eBay.

Designed by Hideki Kazam, the Super Secret Battle “No. 1 Trainer” card was awarded to competitors in 1999, during seven regional Pokémon card tournaments in Japan. The matches were held in secret locations, and winners were awarded a No. 1 Trainer card. The illusive trainer cards were required for entry into the tournament finals, aptly named the Secret Super Battle tournament.

As only seven copies are believed to exist, the card is undeniably rare, and six have earned a perfect Gem Mint 10 rating. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that in July 2020, one sold for a staggering $90,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The 1st Edition Neo Genesis Lugia card is unique in that it was part of the base set from the Neo Genesis collection, rather than an exclusive release. Though there are over 500 copies in circulation, collectors have seen a significant increase in the card’s value, especially for those rated with a Gem Mint 10 rating.

In November 2020, a pristine copy sold for close to $130,000 in an auction, remarkable for a base set card. Though anything below the Gem Mint 10 rating sells for quite a bit less, the card is still currently estimated to sell for an average of $70,000.

The Pikachu Illustrator card is widely considered one of the most valuable and rare Pokémon cards available. Between 1997 and 1998, a Japanese magazine called CoroCoro comic held a contest for Pokémon fans, awarding winners with the Pikachu Illustrator card.

The recognizable card was illustrated by Atsuko Nishida, the original illustrator of Pikachu, and features a unique pen icon, representing the CoroCoro contest. Only 19 copies are said to currently exist, so it’s no surprise they sell for such high amounts. The card recently sold for $195,000, making it one of the most expensive Pokémon cards ever sold at auction.

1 1st Edition Charizard Holo “Shadowless” ($220,574)

Perhaps the most well-known, “rare” Pokémon card is the 1st Edition Charizard Holo. First released in 1999, the sought after card is still one of the most expensive as well. The initial release of the card featured a printing error, which was quickly corrected and reprinted. As such, the misprinted “shadowless” version is extremely rare.

Only 95 cards in circulation have been rated as Gem Mint 10, further increasing the typical auction price. In October 2020, a “shadowless” 1st Edition Charizard Holo sold for a record-breaking $220,574 to the former rapper-turned-YouTuber Logic.
