10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

One would have to sympathize with the non-legendary Pokémon that emerges from its spherical chamber to be faced with the literal god, Arceus. Although it’s one of the most powerful Pokémon there is, there are certain Pokémon that have the ability and makeup to defeat it, however.

Given that Arceus can hold elemental plates that change its moveset type, any pretender hoping to take down the all-seeing all-knowing creator of universes is in for a tricky time. But everyone knows what happened when a man named David came up against a much bigger man called Goliath, so there is hope for these mere mortals.

10 Machamp: King Of Fighters

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

Arceus is a Normal-type Pokémon and is weak against fighting types, but there are only so many Fighting-type Pokémon who could go head-to-head with Arceus and come out on top, and as the only pure Fighting-type Pokémon with a Gigantamax form, Machamp has to be the most likely.

That’s not to say it would be straightforward. Who’s to say the deity wouldn’t just go ahead and pick up a spooky plate, rendering fighting moves ineffective. Thankfully for Machamp’s sake, it isn’t weak against Ghost-type moves, so Arceus’s attacks with that plate wouldn’t have much of an effect. It would need to Gigantamax, but Machamp would take some beating, even for a Pokémon god.

9 Wailord: Size Is Everything

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

If you’re weighing in at a hefty 877.4 lbs, as Wailord would be, it couldn’t hurt when going up against Arceus. Resistant to steel, fire, water, and ice, it narrows the options for Arceus somewhat when it comes to attacks.

With Wailord boasting the highest base HP of all Water-type Pokémon, it might be a drawn-out, attritional affair akin to a Homer Simpson boxing match, but Wailord would get the job done in the end, if only because Arceus has more important things to do, like create Pokémon universes.

8 Copperajah: The Elephant Monster

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

The elephantine Gen VIII Pokémon Copperajah is a Steel-type, which has the most resistances of all the types. This means that whatever plate Arceus adopts, whether it be flame, zap, or splash, it would not turn the fight massively in its favor.

With only three weaknesses—fire, ground, and water—it could hold its own even against legendary Pokémon, but if it Gigantamaxed and doled out its G-max Steelsurge move, Copperajah would surely deal out enough damage to be on a par with and even defeat Arceus.

7 Duraludon: The Durable Dinosaur

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

Duraludon is one of those Pokémon that could be mistaken for a legendary. It wouldn’t look out of place alongside Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus itself, looking somewhat related to the legendary universe custodians.

Looks aside, Duraludon is a steel-type, and so would have very few weaknesses against Arceus’s attacks. The name itself implies this Pokémon can endure anything. While it is not known to evolve, Duraludon does have a Gigantamax form, which it will need against Arceus if it is to be victorious.

6 Lucario: The Perfect Combination of Steel and Speed

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

Lucario’s type, Fighting/Steel, means it’s got the best of both worlds in a battle with Arceus. Fighting-type moves are twice as effective as other moves against the centaur-like Pokémon, and Lucario’s steeliness would give it a good amount of defense against whatever attacks Arceus throws at it.

While it doesn’t massively increase its size, Lucario’s Mega form sees it adopt a killer instinct, unleashing every ounce of its power. While not the largest or most defensively-minded Pokémon, Lucario’s speed, power, and Mega form should be enough to take down Arceus.

5 Melmetal: A Tough Nut To Crack

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

God or not, any Pokémon is going to have trouble coming up against a being composed of liquid metal and giant hex nuts. Melmetal’s Gigamax form would give it a required edge against Arceus, but being a type that has more resistances than any other, Steel, Melmetal is big, strong, and fluid enough to withstand Arceus’s plate-switching stratagem.

Equipped with the strongest punch of all Pokémon, and electric beams it can shoot from its breadbasket that can vaporize opponents, Melmetal surely has enough of an arsenal to get one over on Arceus.

4 Steelix: The Steel Train With Mega Force

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

Steelix is an absolute beast to begin with, but at 34’05” and 1631.4 lbs, Mega Steelix is a force to be reckoned with. Its only vulnerability against Arceus would stem from its weaknesses to fighting, ground, fire, and water-type moves, but it has a fair number of resistances, too.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a god; if you have a physical form that abides by the laws of nature, then there is a chance a non-legendary Pokémon is going to emerge victorious if you were to engage one in battle, and that goes for Steelix.

3 Ditto: The Tricky Transformer

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

Ditto can transform into any physical object, including Pokémon, taking on its form, stats, and abilities. This begs the question; if Ditto transformed into Arceus, would the battle just keep going for eternity? The effects of Arceus’s signature move, Judgment—not to mention the whole plate-holding conundrum—would be called into question, but surely no Pokémon has a better chance of defeating Arceus than Arceus itself.

Although, what if Ditto transformed into another legendary Pokémon, and that Pokémon transformed into its Primal, Mega, or Ultra form, none of which Arceus possesses? Since it would still be Ditto underneath, it would technically qualify as non-legendary, but would that be fair game? If it was, then Ditto could indeed defeat Arceus.

2 Unown: The Enigmatic Pokémon

10 NonLegendary Pokémon That Can Defeat Arceus

While diminutive and seemingly unimposing, Unown live in their own dimension—which Arceus holds no dominion over—and are capable of reading the thoughts of other beings. Whether this extends to Arceus is up to debate, but if it does, then the Unown would be able to telegraph every one of Arceus’s moves and steadily chip away at its HP with their Psychic-type moves.

Also, Arceus uses the Unown to create life; might there be some resentment there? A dispute over forced labor perhaps? Arceus lost control of the Unown in Pokemon 3: The Movie – Spell of the Unown, and if they ever decided to exact revenge, they would put up a more than decent fight.

1 Hoopa: Runs Rings Around Its Opponents

When Hoopa turns into its alternate form, Hoopa Unbound, it has the ability to bend dimensions, as well as summon and control legendary Pokémon. If it were to do so in a battle with Arceus, it might be somewhat dubious, but if the legendaries are being controlled by Hoopa, it’s technically still a legendary vs. non-legendary battle.

Even without any help, the dimension-bending ability, and its protection-bypassing signature move Hyperspace Fury, at least put Hoopa on a level playing field with Arceus. It’s more than likely that the Mischief Pokémon would live up to its nature, however, eschewing a fair battle and calling on some powerful puppets to use as it sees fit to get the win.
