Although the series was about a criminal motorcycle club running guns and getting into all sorts of illegal business in California, the beloved FX show Sons of Anarchy had more plot twists than a soap opera. The show was notorious for throwing curveballs at it’s audience from pretty much the first episode, and a lot of it’s shocking moments were so epic that they still stick into the minds of it’s fans today.

However, every twist wasn’t a home run, and occasionally the series made surprising moves that hurt the characters or series overall. Here are ten instances where a Sons of Anarchy plot twist hurt the show.

10 The School Shooting

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

Honestly, this plot twist was brutal and felt unnecessary given the day in and day out troubles with the Sons of Anarchy. Endless violence, gang wars, and struggle already plagued the Sons for five seasons straight, and then the sixth season opened with a young boy shooting up his school with a gun that coincidentally came from the illegal guns that the Sons have been running throughout the entire series.

The Sons already find themselves in enough trouble on their own, there was really no need to create even more drama through this twist.

9 Otto’s Endless Torment

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy’s writer and creator Kurt Sutter actually wrote himself into the series. He played the role of imprisoned SAMCRO member Otto Delaney, and if his writing is any indication, Sutter has a serious masochism streak.

Despite being incarcerated, Otto played a significant role in the development of the plot, and most of that influence was driven by the never ending injury and torment that Otto seemed to endure. Life in prison and in the MC is rough, but it’s hard to believe anyone endured that much, and it’s even harder to watch it happen.

8 Tig’s Daughter Burns

To give Sutter credit, he’s clearly not just a masochist, he’s got a serious sadist streak when it comes to his characters as well. Everyone in the MC has witnessed more than their fair share of nightmarish violence, but subjecting the usually sociopathic, happy-go-lucky Tig Trager to watching his daughter be burned alive was a bit much.

The traditional saying is that revenge is a dish best served cold, but clearly Damon Pope thought that it was a dish best served piping hot.

7 Clay Killing Donna

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

If we want to get technical, it was Tig who pulled the trigger on Donna, but none of that would have ever happened if Clay had done his due diligence and realized that Opie hadn’t actually flipped on the club.

Not only was killing Donna narratively unnecessary, but it barely made any sense. Yes, it was dark, and she was driving Opie’s truck, but just based on size alone it’s exceptionally difficult to believe that someone could mistake Donna for Opie.

6 Jax Killing Kohn

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

Tara’s whole stalking issue with ATF agent Josh Kohn was basically the catalyst for her resumed relationship with Jax, but killing a federal agent was a bit too much too soon for Sons of Anarchy.

Jax was undoubtedly a seasoned criminal and Kohn was a certifiable creep, however the fact that an ATF agent vanished off the face of the earth after following his abuse victim across the country but Jax and Tara are barely even investigated let alone caught really stretched the bounds of believability.

5 The White Supremacists Attacking Gemma

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

In case anyone was ever wondering, white supremacists are generally awful people. Anyone with a lick of common sense would have already known that, but Sons of Anarchy ensured that the audience was as crystal clear as possible on that fact when they had the new white supremacist group in Charming abduct and sexually assault Gemma.

Gemma being Gemma decides to withhold this information from SAMCRO until she can play it to her advantage, which was just another unnecessary layer to this craptacular cake.

4 Juice Betraying The Club

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

For the majority of the series, Juice Ortiz was a charming and lighthearted addition to a pretty gloomy series. But when the show started to take him to the dark side, it went dark fast. Juice decided to betray the club once he realized that he was biracial, because the club doesn’t allow black members.

This whole plot twist seemed to be pulled out of thin air, and considering the bond between the SAMCRO bros, it’s extremely hard to believe that Juice would forsake everything that matters to him in order to hide this secret instead of just telling everyone the truth.

3 Opie’s Sacrifice

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

After Damon Pope killed Tig’s daughter in a literal trial by fire, it was obvious that he was not an enemy who was to be trifled with.

However that gangster fireworks display apparently wasn’t enough, and Pope decided that one of the Sons who was stuck in prison was going to have to die in there. Opie decided to be the sacrificial lamb, and Jax watched his best friend be beaten to death. It was a devastating blow to a show that was already dark enough.

2 Jax Killing His Own Mother

10 Plot Twists That Hurt Sons Of Anarchy

Realistically speaking, the series was only going to end one way. Gemma has been a cancer in Jax’s life and the life of the club since their inception, and the only way that Jax could cure what ails him was by getting rid of Gemma for good.

However, killing his own mom was a bit much, even for Sons of Anarchy. The show wanted to make it clear that Jax had nothing left before he died, but it wasn’t really necessary to see their protagonist fall so far.

1 Tara’s Death

Tara and Jax’s relationship was always turbulent, and it wasn’t always clear that they were meant to be. However, once Tara had been killed it was like every glimmer of hope that was left in the series had been extinguished.

Jax went completely off the deep end, and the show became a nonstop rampage of desperation and despair until Jax finally ended his own life. The MC life is a game of Russian roulette that only ends one way, but the brutality of Tara’s death and it’s aftermath was too much.
