10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

The Pokémon franchise is close to approaching its 25th anniversary, and it’s remarkable how much the atypical RPG series has progressed since its debut. There are now a wealth of spin-offs that approach the Pokémon series from different angles, whether it’s from a genre standpoint or an entirely different medium. There’s tremendous depth to the Pokémon series, but one big reason that the property is so popular is because of the wide range of different types of Pokémon that are available.

Many of these Pokémon types skew towards common elements, but there are also more adventurous types of creatures, like Dragon-type Pokémon. Dragon Pokémon are often seen as synonymous with Legendary Pokémon and have the expectation to be on the larger side, which makes the number of tiny Dragon-type Pokémon particularly interesting anomalies.

10 Gible Is A Literal Ankle-Biter That Still Shouldn’t Be Underestimated (0.7m / 2’04”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Dragon-type Pokémon inevitably make up some of the most interesting creatures in the franchise due to the increasingly broad definition of what qualifies as a “dragon.” Gible eventually evolves into the ferocious powerhouse, Garchomp, but the Pokémon is still intimidating in its earlier forms. Gible is a Generation IV menace from the Sinnoh region that’s a Dragon and Ground-type hybrid that gets contextualized as a land shark-esque monstrosity. Gible is only 2’04”, but its sharp teeth and energetic attitude make up for its small stature.

9 It Takes Some Time For Jangmo-o To Come Into Its Own & Embrace Its Dragon Roots (0.6m / 2’00”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

The Pokémon franchise has been running for nearly 25 years, but the games are far from out of ideas and some of the most exciting and ambitious Pokémon designs are from the later games in the series. Generation VII’s Alola region houses some unique Pokémon, including a family of Dragon-type Pokémon that Jangmo-o belongs to. Jangmo-o gets bigger and more dangerous with each of its forms and incorporates a dominion over metallic objects that makes this Pokémon seem mythical in nature. Jangmo-o’s final form properly represents a worthy Dragon-type Pokémon, but his journey begins at a meek two-feet tall.

8 Axew Is An Adorable, Bite-Sized Start To A Dangerous Journey (0.6m / 2’00”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

The Pokémon series does an exceptional job with how a Pokémon’s evolutionary line can begin in a relatively docile place that naturally grows more dangerous and intense. Axew is a Dragon-type Pokémon that’s new to Generation V’s Unova region and it’s a particularly cute two-feet tall critter.

Axew represents the soft side of Dragon Pokémon before the fangs come out and even though its evolved form, Fraxure, is also on the tinier side, their final form, Haxorus, is an absolute beast. It’s hard to examine a behemoth like Haxorus and imagine that it starts from something as innocent as Axew.

7 Bagon Is Another Example Of How Big Dragon Threats Begin In Small Packages (0.6m / 2’00”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Bagon is a Dragon-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region out of Generation III that establishes a trajectory that’s followed by many future three-form Dragon Pokémon. Some Pokémon don’t pay off until the trainer has put in the right amount of hard work to chisel seasoned fighters out of these creatures. Bagon is one such example where the initial Pokémon is a two-foot tall menace that makes trainers want to cuddle up with the creature, not run away in terror. Bagon eventually turns into Salamence, which is a classic Dragon Pokémon that commands a lot of authority.

6 Dreepy Is A Creepy Combo That Barely Clocks In At One-Foot Tall (0.5m / 1’08”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Some fantastic Pokémon designs are imagined simply by the combination of two different typings that haven’t been explored to excess in the past. Dreepy doesn’t make its debut until the most recent Generation VIII, but it ambitiously is a hybrid of a Dragon- and Ghost-type Pokémon. A ghost of a dragon is an infinitely compelling idea, but Dreepy doesn’t flaunt its supernatural status and the Pokémon is only 1’08”. Dreepy fans really need to dedicate themselves to the Pokémon in order to see results since its evolved forms, Drakloak and Dragapult don’t occur until levels 50 and 60 respectively.

5 Noibat’s Tiny Size Deceptively Obscures The Pokémon’s Dragon Status (0.5m / 1’08”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Plenty of Dragon-type Pokémon proudly flaunt their size and status, but there are some examples that tow the hybrid line so well that the Dragon-type part of the equation gets lost in the shuffle.

Noibat is a Kalos region Pokémon that’s both a Dragon and Flying-type, but in the end, it resembles a bat more than it does a legendary beast. This confusion isn’t helped by the fact that Noibat is only 1’08”, which means that it’s not even big by bat standards either, and it becomes even more forgettable in the process.

4 Appletun Is The Apex Of One Of The Strangest Dragon-Type Pokémon (0.4m / 1’04”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Tortoises have prehistoric roots, and there is a solid argument for how these ancient reptiles can be considered modern equivalents of dinosaurs to some degree. That’s the impetus with Appletun, the final form of the Galar region’s bizarre Dragon/Apple Pokémon hybrid. The Appletun evolutionary path results in an embarrassing turtle and pie combo that’s not what a Dragon should represent. This oddity is barely over one-foot tall, at 1’04”, and it’s another Pokémon that’s easy to completely overlook, especially when it comes to Dragon-types.

3 Flapple Still Seems More Like A Dessert Than A Dragon (0.3m / 1’00”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Flapple isn’t always the final form of the Galar region’s most ridiculous Dragon-type Pokémon, Applin, but it’s at least the only member of the family that actually resembles a Dragon in some capacity. Flapple is also a Grass-type Pokémon and it takes the form of an ornery dragon that’s corkscrewed its way out of an unsuspecting apple. Flapple is still only one-foot tall, which means that all of this creativity is going on at such a small scale that it’s still easy to confuse this Pokémon for mangled fruit.

2 Goomy Is An Unassuming Puddle That Doesn’t Look Like Much Of Anything (0.3m / 1’00”)

10 Smallest Dragon Pokémon Ranked

Camouflage is a popular tactic that helps some of the less glamorous Pokémon gain the advantage over the natural predators. This premise can sometimes get pushes too far, and Goomy is a creature that’s introduced in the Kalos region that seems like a waste of the Dragon-type Pokémon status. Goomy is only one-foot tall and it looks like something a Fairy-type Pokémon would expel as discharge and not an intimidating Dragon Pokémon with latent potential. Goomy feels derivative of similar Pokémon like Ditto or Mimikyu, but it’s the least interesting of the sort and a surprising take on a Dragon.

1 Applin Represents The Smallest Of Dragon Pokémon That Can Fit In As Fruit (0.2m / 0’08”)

Pokémon deserves credit when it comes to some of their more ambitious designs, especially when they turn out to be massive misfires. Applin might go on to gain a massive following in the future, but it remains one of the most unassuming and tiny Pokémon of the generation, let alone Dragon-type Pokémon. Applin is a Dragon and Grass-type hybrid that is modeled after an apple. This means that Applin is under a foot tall and only checks in at 0’08”. It’s actually somewhat insulting to Dragons to reduce the creature to a worm that’s stuck in a piece of fruit.
