For its fans across the world, the Harry Potter franchise is known for its interesting, well-developed characters. While every fan has their favorite, no one can deny that the connections between these characters drives the plot of the series. One such connection, especially earlier on in the series, is that between Harry Potter and his rival and enemy, Draco Malfoy.

As important as this dynamic is, there is also a massive amount of deviance in their relationship between the book and their film counterparts, ranging from humorous to drastically important. So what did the movies change from the source material?

Draco Is Introduced In the Book Earlier

In the film version of Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, Draco is introduced shortly before the Sorting Hat ceremony. There, he insults Ron Weasley, sealing his enmity with both Ron and Harry.

Events in the book play out quite differently. There, Harry meets Draco in Diagon Alley, where Draco actually attempts to befriend Harry. They quickly fall out after Draco insults Ron though, causing events to end similarly.

Draco Is Actually Important In Book 5

In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix, Draco is barely seen. In fact, that movie is where Draco appears the least, with the character only having slightly over a minute of screen time.

However, Draco plays an important role in the book. He acts as a member of the Inquisitorial Squad, a group of students that are deputized by Dolores Umbridge. As such, he is a constant thorn in the side of the main characters for most of the book, instead of a minorly featured threat.

Draco Was At The Quidditch World Cup

While the scene is significantly shorter in the film, the Quidditch world cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire provides particularly interesting worldbuilding. Unfortunately, it soon ends in tragedy, when a group of Death Eaters, acolytes of Lord Voldemort, attack the festivities, torturing several muggles.

In the book, Draco is seen during the chaos, where he taunts Harry and his friends, especially over Hermione Granger’s Muggle parentage.

Draco Was An Informant for Rita Skeeter

Rita Skeeter is a major nuisance for Harry in both versions of Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire. A dishonest and opportunistic journalist, Rita’s articles discredit Harry and his friends throughout the events of the story.

However, Draco played a direct role in the book version of events. Near the end of the story, it is revealed that Draco had acted as a source of untrustworthy information for Rita throughout the school year, hoping to discredit Harry through Rita.

Draco got Harry Temporarily Suspended From Quidditch

In Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, Harry is unable to play quidditch for the Gryffindor team, on account of a long-term suspension. However, this suspension is partially instigated by Draco in the books.

In that version of the story, and in what is definitely on-brand for Draco, he mocks the death of Harry’s parents, as well as insults the Weasley twins after the Gryffindor team loses to Slytherin. The resulting scuffle sees the suspension of both Harry and the Weasley twins, furthering the vitriol between Harry and Draco.

Draco Challenges Harry To A Duel And Never Shows Up

Draco and Harry constantly butted heads throughout both the film and book versions of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. Eventually, this comes to a head when Draco challenges Harry to a duel at midnight, to which Harry accepts. Harry and his second for the duel, Ron, agree to meet Draco in the trophy room.

But, this is soon shown to be a set-up, and Draco never shows up. Instead, Harry and Ron, as well as Hermione and Neville (who tagged along), only narrowly evade the caretaker, Argus Filch.

Draco And Harry’s Train Encounter Ends Differently

During the events of Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince, Harry tries to eavesdrop on Draco and his fellow Slytherins with the aid of his invisibility cloak. However, Draco turns the tables on Harry and discovers him, managing to stun him before breaking his nose. This scene deftly shows the darker tone Draco and Harry’s relationship takes in this installment of the saga. In the film, Harry is found by Luna Lovegood, before the two rejoin the rest of Hogwart’s student body.

However in the book, he is instead found by Nymphadora Tonks, an Auror and Remus Lupin’s partner. While the encounter between Harry and Draco is essentially the same, its aftermath allows both versions of the story to explore Harry’s connection with two very different characters.

Draco Fakes Being A Dementor To Scare Harry

In both versions of Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, dementors play a massive role. Inhuman beings that feed on happy emotions with the ability to drain souls, Harry’s conflict with the dementors is a pivotal focus of the story.

In the book, however, Draco attempts to use this to his advantage in a quidditch match. With the help of his lackeys, Crabbe and Goyle, Draco tries to impersonate a dementor to bully Harry. But his plans are soon foiled when Harry attacks him with his Patronus spell.

Harry Sees Draco In Knockturn Alley

In Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets, Harry accidentally finds himself in Knockturn Alley, a dark mirror of the bright and cheerful Diagon Alley. While Harry eventually finds his way back, the book adds an additional event to his time there, which is only in the deleted scenes of the film.

In the book, Harry spies on Draco and his father Lucius Malfoy, who are shopping at the black market store Borgin and Burkes. While this event does not directly lead to a confrontation between Harry and Draco, Harry eventually recalls it in an attempt to discover who the Heir of Slytherin is, who he believes to be Draco at the time.

Draco Isn’t Branded With The Dark Mark In The Book

In Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, Draco’s involvement with the Death Eaters and his missions to assassinate Dumbledore are major plot points. In the film, Draco eventually shows Dumbledore his Dark Mark, the symbol of Lord Voldemort himself.

However, this massive turn in Draco’s story, and his involvement with Hogwarts as a whole, is not the same in the book. Instead, this reveal of the Dark Mark is only an assumption on Harry’s part, and Draco being definitively branded with the symbol is never made clear.
