Everything doesn’t always go right for them, and there are times when they can be hurt and vulnerable. Adventure Time tugs at the heartstrings when it needs to, and here are 10 times that it does.

In the episode “Time Sandwich,” Jake made the best sandwich he ever created. Just as he was about to eat it, Magic Man stole it and trapped it inside a bubble where time moves slowly. Jake found out that the only way to move at normal speed in the bubble is to think of sad stuff.

To get sad, Jake thought of himself dying and Lady Rainicorn falling in love with Mr. Cupcake. It was depressing to see Jake so upset, but at least he was able to work out his insecurities in his head.

Marceline and Princess Bubblegum’s relationship had many bumps along the road. They still cared about each other, but they both had trouble communicating what they were feeling. This is evident in the episode “What Was Missing,” in which Marceline sings “I’m Just Your Problem” to Bubblegum.

“I’m Just Your Problem” was emotional because it encapsulated how Marceline felt around Bubblegum. She felt like she was only a bother, and she thought Bubblegum hated having her around. Of course, Bubblegum didn’t feel that way, but the song left fans wondering if the two of them would ever make up.

8 Marshall Lee And Fionna

In some episodes of Adventure Time, Ice King told stories of gender-swapped versions of the characters. In one of these episodes, “Bad Little Boy,” Marshall Lee flirted with and teased Fionna. When he faked his death to get Fionna to admit she had a crush on him, she yelled at him and called him a freak.

Even though this was the first time fans got to know Marshall Lee, it was still emotional seeing him almost die. It was also hard to watch Fionna’s feelings be twisted and played with, like Marshall Lee did.

7 Finn’s Arm

Adventure Time started out as just being about Finn and Jake. But over the course of the show, more about their family was revealed. In the episode “Escape from the Citadel,” Finn finally met his father. However, he learned that he wasn’t the good person he thought he was.

When Finn’s father tried to abandon him again, Finn grabbed the stem he was using to escape. The stem was too powerful, and it caused Finn’s arm to be ripped right out of his body. It was sad watching Finn lose his arm and his father all at the same time.

Fern was first created from both the Finn Sword and the Grass Sword. Though he started out as Finn’s enemy, the two gradually formed a friendly relationship. That’s why it was especially sad to see him fade away in the series finale, “Come Along With Me.”

In the episode, Finn and Fern worked together to kill the Grass Demon. But since the Grass Demon and Fern were connected, both of them died. As Fern faded away, he asked Finn to bury him at the Tree Fort. Fern was certainly a complex character, and it was a shame to see him go.

5 Finn And Bubblegum

For the longest time, Finn had a crush on Bubblegum. But once he realized it was unrequited, he tried to move on from her. It was even going smoothly until the episode “Burning Low.” As Finn started to date Flame Princess, Bubblegum was worried about their safety. Since Flame Princess is made of fire and can be destructive, she tried to talk Finn out of dating her.

Finn misunderstood her and believed she was jealous of their relationship. He lashed out at her and told her he was done being in love with her. Although fans understood where both Finn and Bubblegum were coming from, it was a heated moment for all involved.

4 Marceline And Ice King

Right after the Mushroom War, Marceline was still young and didn’t have anyone to turn to. That’s when Ice King stepped in and took care of her. Ice King later put on a magical crown to protect her, but it caused him to go insane and lose his memories of her.

In the episode “I Remember You,” a much older Marceline tries to get the Ice King to remember her, but he can’t. Later, she finds a song he wrote for her when he was still stable, and they sing it together. It’s a poignant scene that will likely stick with fans for years to come.

In “Come Along With Me,” Betty, Ice King, and Finn were trapped inside GOLB. While Ice King and Finn escaped, Betty chose to stay behind to use the magic crown and stop GOLB. Ice King regained his sanity, but he might have lost the one person who truly understood him.

Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship is something many fans wanted for years. Once it was actually confirmed, an overwhelming sense of joy surely swept over the majority of the audience.

1 The Last Episode

Adventure Time is one of the longest-running shows to air on Cartoon Network. At that time, the show managed to resonate with many people. Naturally, the final episode would be an emotional one for fans, even without the deaths and sacrifices.

In the last moments of “Come Along With Me,” the characters’ lives after the finale are shown. They’re all living to the fullest without an impending threat looming over them. It was a bittersweet farewell for some of the generation’s most heartwarming characters.
