Warning: potential spoilers for Archie: Love and Heartbreak #1!

Romance will be in the air in Riverdale this February when Archie Comics releases Archie: Love and Heartbreak, a special one shot celebrating Valentine’s Day. Starring many of Archie’s iconic characters, the book is written by Thomas Pitilli, Stephanie Cooke, and Sina Grace, with art by Pitilli, Lisa Sterle and Iolanda Zanfardino, colors by Matt Herms and letters by Jack Morelli and goes on sale in print and digital February 9.

In the 2010s, Archie Comics shook the industry by taking a more modern approach to their stable of characters. The company began incorporating social issues into their stories, as well as introducing new characters such as Kevin Keller, the franchise’s first LGBTQIA+ character. In 2013, the publisher introduced new versions of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the rest, updating their looks for the new era, but managing to keep intact that which made Archie Comics great in the first place. Around the same time, the company began a line of iconoclastic horror comics starring the Riverdale gang, and these inspired a series of one-shots at Halloween, starring Madam Satan, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and others. Despite the success of the horror titles, Archie Comics has not forgotten the teenage humor and romance that put the franchise on the map, and this Valentine’s Day, it will release Archie: Love and Heartbreak.

In a press release, Archie Comics has provided an exclusive first look at the special, including plot details and covers, which are shared below. The one-shot follows Archie and the gang as they make up and break up over the course of one night at the Riverdale Carnival. All is not well: Archie and Veronica have hit a speed bump in their relationship, and Kevin is having problems with ex Devon. Meanwhile, Jughead explains to Betty his philosophy on love. Jamie L. Rotante, the company’s Senior Director of Editorial, stated the intent of the book is to“welcome fans of the modern comics back to the romantic core of Riverdale.” Enjoy the covers and issue summary below.

Jughead shares his POV on love while Archie and Veronica’s relationship is on the rocks! Can Kevin Keller help Archie save his romance? Maybe not, since Kevin’s caught up in his own romantic dilemma, and is worried about being in over his head on his own date! Who will end up together? What relationships are on the verge of collapse? Who will find true love?

Holiday-themed specials have become popular with comic book publishers in recent years. They allow creators to tell fun, one-off stories using iconic characters. Halloween specials have proven particularly popular, and Archie Comics’ non-canon horror line lent itself well to such books. Yet, as Rotante noted, humor and romance are at the actual core of Archie’s identity – which makes a Valentine’ Day special starring Riverdale’s finest a slam dunk. Archie’s romantic escapades have entertained fans for 80 years, a tradition that continues to this day. The stories in Archie: Love and Heartbreak take the humor and heartache that come with teen romance and modernize them. Rotante concluded by hoping that “readers see a little bit of themselves in each of these stories.”
