Warning! Spoilers for Batman/Superman Annual #1 below!

Batman and Superman just experienced their own Avengers: Infinity War snap-like moment. In an effort to discover who would win in a fight between the iconic DC heroes, the Bat-Family and the Justice League has been turned into dust – much like the many Marvel heroes who faded away at the end of Infinity War.

The MCU’s Avengers: Infinity War depicted one of the most devastating endings in comic book film history. The final moments of the movie see Thanos acquire all of the Infinity Stones needed to rewrite reality, as the Mad Titan executes his plan of wiping out half of all life with a single snap. The results are crushing as heroes such as Spider-Man, the Winter Soldier, Black Panther, and many more turn into dust. Now, Batman and Superman have experienced their own version of the snap, albeit under much less dire circumstances.

Batman/Superman Annual #1 by Joshua Williamson, Dave Eaglesham, Gleb Melnikov, Clayton Henry, and Alejandro Sánchez features the imps Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk training a couple of younger imps as they play with Batman and Superman action figures. The two reality manipulating characters have a disagreement over who would win in a fight between the two heroes, which leads Bat-Mite to tell a story where Batman wins. In that tale, Batman’s greatest allies assemble at the Hall of Justice while they learn the multiverse is being ripped apart. Mr. Terrific devises that Superman is an anomaly and shouldn’t be in that reality. That’s when his presence leads to the Bat-Family being turned into dust.

As Superman pleads with Batman that he has no idea what’s causing the heroes to be turned into dust (the Justice League also soon meets their end), the latter decides to hunt his longtime friend. The Dark Knight beats Superman by turning the sun red and finishing him off for good.

Despite the reality being a figment of Bat-Mite’s creative imagination, the Thanos-like snap affects of losing the Bat-Family and Justice League are devastating. Watching Batman hold Damian in his arms only for his son turn into dust is reminiscent of Iron Man and Spider-Man’s heartbreaking post-snap moment. Thankfully, in this case, the snap never actually happened and was just Bat-Mite doing his best to tell a tale where Batman finally breaks and defeats Superman. Even if it was all a story, Bat-Mite showed the snap would be equally as heartbreaking if it ever took place in the DC Comics universe.
