Spoilers for Legends of the Dark Knight #13-14 ahead!

Azrael, Batman’s one-time replacement, has his own line of cool gadgets, including his own versions of the Batcave and the Bat-Boat. In the DC Digital First Legends of the Dark Knight, Batman teams up with Azrael to keep Ras ‘al Ghul from getting his hands on a special elixir that will supercharge his Lazarus pits. The issues are on sale now on digital comics outlets.

Azrael first appeared in 1992’s Sword of Azrael #1 and was created by the team of Denny O’Neill and Joe Quesada. Born Jean Paul Valley, Azrael was a member of the Order of St. Dumas, a fanatical religious order who programmed its members to be assassins. Batman crossed paths with Azrael and helped him break with the Dumas’ programming before taking him in as an apprentice. When Batman’s back was broken by Bane in the epic Knightfall event, Azrael took his place. Azrael soon proved unworthy for the job when he allowed an innocent to die and Bruce Wayne would return and take the mantle back. Since then, Azrael and Batman have maintained a distant and tense relationship, but when Ras ‘al Ghul threatens the Order of St. Dumas, Azrael and Batman must team up to stop him.

As Azrael and Batman fight their way through Ghul’s hordes, readers learn that Azrael has his own version of the Batcave, which he merely calls the “Sanctum;” he also his own version of the Bat-Boat as well. These revelations lead to some great character moments between Batman and Azrael. When Batman sees Azrael’s high-tech boat, he makes a crack about organized religion and money, and Azrael hopes God forgives Batman for his mockery.

Azrael’s toys are cool, and the story uses them to point out that he and Batman are not that much different—a fact Azrael reminds Batman of several times throughout the story. Batman stubbornly refuses to admit he is anything like Azrael, leading to some memorable exchanges between the two. Both Azrael and Batman are zealots in the war against crime, so devoted to the cause they trained to peak condition and invested in high-tech equipment to help them catch villains. Batman does not see himself as a fanatic, mainly because he will not kill—something Azrael does not hesitate to do. But remove that and the religious imagery, and they are very much alike.

Azrael was Batman’s one-time replacement, and he has his own version of the Batcave, proving he took a few cues from the Caped Crusader. Legends of the Dark Knight #13-14 are written by Brandon Easton, with art by Karl Mostert, colors by David Baron and letters by Becca Carey.
