While it’s only a few episodes into its second season, the CW’s Batwoman show has undergone some major changes and dramatic upheavals in its short life, both in the show itself and behind-the-scenes. In particular, the abrupt exit of its leading actor Ruby Rose at the end of the first season forced the showrunners to completely revise many storylines.

The new Batwoman, Javicia Leslie, does an admirable job of keeping up, and her character Ryan Wilder has her own troubles that Batwoman season two is embracing. However, the sudden shake-up meant that so many storylines had to be abandoned that it was difficult for longtime viewers to keep up.

10 Alice’s Revenge

One of the biggest casualties of Ruby Rose’s departure from the series, taking the character of Kate Kane with her, is the whole storyline revolving around Kate’s sister Beth Kane, better known as the series’ main villain, Alice. The whole of Batwoman season one deals with Alice’s revenge plot against her former family, including her killing both her step-mother and “brother” Mouse. Things were all set to escalate in season two until Kate Kane supposedly died and Alice’s revenge fantasy went up in flames.

9 Mrs. Freeze

A year before Batwoman launched on the CW, viewers were treated to an introduction to Kate Kane and the Arrowverse version of Gotham City in the “Elseworlds” crossover story. As it was well before the series had been planned out, numerous potential story ideas and characters were introduced that haven’t reappeared since.

Possibly the most tragic is the disappearance of Nora Fries, the wife of Mr. Freeze, who made a major appearance and actually defeated Killer Frost. In recent Batman comics, Mrs. Freeze is even more unstable than her husband, so it’s sad Nora hasn’t returned.

8 The Crows Vs Batwoman

One of the best things about the show is the uneasy relationship Batwoman has with the Crows. The elite security force was designed by Kate’s father Jacob as a replacement for Batman, but it ended up basically just being a private security firm for the rich and powerful.

Jacob’s wanted Batwoman gone since she first showed up, but it all came to a head in the final episode of season one in which Jacob betrayed Batwoman’s trust and reaffirmed the Crows’ commitment to taking her down. However, despite new Batwoman Ryan Wilder hating the Crows, the Crows themselves have almost completely forgotten that they’re supposed to be hunting her.

7 The Search For Bruce Wayne

The biggest mystery in Batwoman season one was the disappearance of Bruce Wayne, and, of course, Batman. By the time Kate Kane returns to Gotham, her cousin Bruce had been missing for several years, with no clue as to his current whereabouts, and even the appearance of an older Bruce from another Earth during “Crisis On Infinite Earths” didn’t offer any explanation.

When Tommy Elliot posed as Bruce during season two’s first episode, it looked like the show was going to continue the search for Bruce Wayne, but, since Elliot was unmasked, everyone has completely forgotten about Batman.

6 Psycho-Pirate And Doctor Destiny

The “Elseworlds” crossover took place a year before both Batwoman and “Crisis On Infinite Earths” and served as a setup to both, with multiple elements that were intended to appear in one or both. One of the biggest moments came at the end of “Elseworlds,” where a masked Roger Hayden (Bob Frazer) was placed in the room next to the crossover’s villain John Deegan (Jeremy Davies).

These two are better known as the major DC villains Psycho-Pirate and Dr. Destiny, so putting them next to each other was a big deal, but, so far, neither of them have resurfaced in the Arrowverse.

5 The Joker’s Daughter

Episode 14 of Batwoman season one “Grinning From Ear To Ear” introduced one of its most intriguing characters in the form of Duela Dent (Alessandra Torresani), who—as well as being related to Harvey “Two-Face” Dent—in the comics is best known as The Joker’s Daughter.

While the show has yet to bring in the actual Joker, Duela Dent is already out there carving smiles into her victims’ faces and peeling off her own face at the end of the episode. That’s where the show has left her, although, hopefully, The Joker’s Daughter will re-emerge at some point.

4 The Arkham Breakout

The “Elseworlds” Arrowverse crossover actually took place canonically several episodes into Batwoman season one, and one of the major incidents in the crossover that would reverberate throughout the rest of the season was a big breakout at Arkham Asylum.

While multiple inmates got loose, including Alice’s adopted brother Mouse, the show only marginally dipped into the actual breakout, with several characters being unaware it even happened. Plus, major Batman villains were teased such as Riddler, Penguin, Bane, and Two-Face, but none have made a proper appearance since.

3 The World’s Finest

One of the biggest and most entertaining parts of the crossover stories “Elseworlds” and “Crisis On Infinite Earths” was Kate Kane’s burgeoning friendship with Supergirl/Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist). In fact, Supergirl directly refers to them as the “world’s finest,” referencing the moniker usually given to the duo of Batman and Superman.

Both crossovers seemed to be teasing more team-ups between Batwoman and Supergirl, but, with Kate Kane no longer around and Supergirl being on its final season, this ongoing storyline seems unlikely to continue despite a shard of Kryptonite being a major part of season two.

2 Hush As Bruce Wayne

When it comes to huge and interesting storylines that Batwoman dropped like a stone, they don’t come much bigger than Tommy Elliot/Hush pretending to be Bruce Wayne. The cliffhanger ending to season one made it clear that the show was going to tackle the great Hush storyline from the comics where Tommy Elliot usurps Bruce Wayne’s life while he’s missing presumed dead following the events of “Final Crisis.” Season two began with this story but immediately finished it after just one episode despite Hush being a major Batman villain.

1 The Joker

Throughout Batwoman, the one character who has been continually teased is The Joker. While, for the longest time, Kate Kane blamed Batman for the loss of her sister and the death of their mother, it was Joker who drove them off the road. While Luke Fox has suggested that the reason neither Batman nor Joker has been seen in years is that Batman probably killed him, this was only a guess.

With the recent appearance of a Jack Napier painting and confirmation that Jack Napier is Joker’s real name in the Arrowverse, it seemed like Batwoman was finally heading towards an appearance by The Joker, but the painting’s been destroyed, and that storyline has once again been dropped.
