After a series of intense battles over three days, and after struggling for the past three years, Team USA has finally claimed the gold in the Overwatch League World Cup.
The competition began on Halloween, the day before BlizzCon 2019 began. Teams fought in the Preliminaries for a place beside USA, South Korea, Canada, China, and France in the Group Stage.
The Group Stage took place on November 1, the first day of BlizzCon, running all day long. Denmark, the United Kingdom, Russia, Sweden, and the Netherlands all fought for the coveted crown in a round robin style tournament, which lead itself to a lot of surprises. South Korea, the defending champions of all three previous World Cups losing against both France and USA in the round robin.
The top three from each group of five went on to the next day, with the top two teams – USA and China – qualifying automatically for the semifinals, while the other four – Denmark and South Korea, and France and the Netherlands – battling in the quarterfinals.
With Denmark and the Netherlands eliminated, the World Cup really started to heat up. France and China fought hard, but China managed to edge out a win 3-1. And then USA and South Korea took the stage.
South Korea took the first map, but the USA brought it back hard, taking the next two maps. The fourth maps was fought to a draw, but the fifth map went to the USA; for the first time since the Overwatch World Cup had begun, South Korea was out of contention for the gold, and the USA was trying for it instead. USA had been disappointed tremendously in previous years, getting knocked out fairly early in the competition.
Now with the gold medal on the line, the stadium packed to capacity, the two teams – both made up entirely of professional players from the Overwatch League – took their seats. The first map, Ilios, a control map, started with China taking the first point, much to the delight of their large fan section. But, rallying together, USA pushed them back, taking the next two points and a map win. The second escort map was King’s Row, a favorite of many players. USA kept China from finishing the map, and fought hard, pushing their way to three points, and taking another map victory.
The crowd was loud, chanting “one more map! One more map!” as the third escort map, Dorado, began. Choosing to take their attack first, USA managed to cap all three points, finishing the map, though China made them work for it, making them finish in overtime. And the USA went on the defense. China struggled against the unity and mechanical skill of the USA players, and were unable to finish the map, giving USA the third map they needed to win the match.
After three years of heartbreak, the USA finally stands at the top, hoisting the World Cup trophy, the first nation other than South Korea to hold the title of World Champions.
