The latest update from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations leaves fans weeping after killing Naruto’s beloved tailed beast, Kurama. Naruto’s plot revolves around the titular character who has been used as a vessel for the strongest known tailed beast, a type of powerful monster. In order to seal the nine-tailed fox, Kurama, both of Naruto’s parents had to sacrifice themselves to protect him. This leads to Naruto living his life as an orphan with his custody falling on his village’s leader, the Third Hokage, who knows nothing about raising kids. Being an orphan and a vessel for a powerful force at the same time often results in Naruto being isolated by his classmates and society. If not for Naruto’s strong will and determination, the series may have long ended with Naruto’s death.

Despite all odds, Naruto has striven to belong and make friends. With Shikamaru and Choji being his first closest friends, Naruto slowly manages to expand his circle. Even though he is still often judged and feared for being the Nine Tails’ vessel, known as a Jinchuriki, his friends treat him as another part of the gang. Towards the end of Naruto, Naruto even befriends Kurama. He then masters Kurama’s power and defeats Kaguya together with Sasuke and his Rinnegan, and at the start of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, the series reveals that Naruto has finally achieved his dream of becoming the Hokage.

Unfortunately, chapter 55 of the series has just claimed Kurama’s life. In exchange for using Baryon Mode, Kurama tells Naruto that it will use all of their chakra and his life. Naruto, however, thinks that the Baryon Mode will kill the both of them. Kurama intentionally misleads Naruto since he knows that Naruto won’t willingly sacrifice any life other than his own no matter the case. Kurama just revealed the truth the moment he’s about to perish.

Naruto, who still has no idea about Baryon Mode’s real price, gives Kurama a lackluster farewell speech. When Kurama tells the whole truth, he only has a few panels worth of text before his chakra ultimately perishes. Naruto then wakes up with Boruto holding his hand.

With Naruto’s greatest nerf yet, the series is bound to have major changes. Losing Kurama’s power reduces Naruto to yet another shinobi of Konoha. He may no longer have the strength to protect the village on his own. Not only that, he has also lost the source of his immense chakra and super strength. With this, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations strongly states that series is all about Boruto and his generation, and the previous generation are no more than supporting characters.
