Cobra Kai season 2 ends with a clear tragedy, but doesn’t clarify the current whereabouts of Robby Keene. The teenage Miyagi-Do student participates in a massive school brawl, and then leaves after accidentally putting one of his peers in coma. Given that Robby plays a major role in the on-going conflict between the main senseis, streamers may curious if he’ll transform into a villain or have a redemption story in Cobra Kai season 3 on Netflix.

Portrayed by Tanner Buchanan, Robby arguably has the most complex character arc in Cobra Kai, as he trains with Miyagi-Do leader Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) while re-building a damaged relationship with his father, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who re-started the Cobra Kai dojo. Robby also has a romantic relationship with Daniel’s daughter, Samantha (Mary Mouser), who — in a drunken moment — locks lips with Johnny’s first Cobra Kai student, Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña). In the Cobra Kai season 2 finale, Miguel’s girlfriend Tory Nichols (Peyton List) ignites a school brawl after confronting Samantha about the kiss. Incidentally, Robby squares off against Miguel, and inadvertently kicks him over a railing, resulting in life-threatening injuries.

For dramatic purposes, Cobra Kai relies heavily on the “no mercy” concept that fuels much of the action in The Karate Kid, the 1984 movie that inspired a narrative continuation on TV. In the Netflix series, Johnny initially embraces a “no mercy” mentality during karate competitions, but slowly changes his perspective after the reappearance of his former mentor, John Kreese (Martin Kove). In Cobra Kai season 2, Johnny tells Miguel that “no mercy” shouldn’t be applied to every situation — a concept that the student remembers during his school fight with Robby. The ironic twist is that Miguel’s tragic fall happens immediately after showing mercy to Robby. Cobra Kai season 2 ends with Johnny losing his dojo to Kreese and trying to emotionally cope with a guilty conscious. Meanwhile, Daniel’s wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) requests that he permanently shut down Miyagi-Do, and Robby’s fate is left uncertain. Here’s how Cobra Kai season 3 could address Robby’s disappearance.

Robby Left After His Fight With Miguel in Cobra Kai Season 2

In the Cobra Kai season 2 finale, the fight sequence between Robby and Miguel references the series’ major themes. First, Robby states that Miguel can’t cheat his way out of the scenario, which thematically links to Cobra Kai’s long history of questionable tactics. Miguel then trolls the Miyagi-Do student by boasting about the skills learned from his father, and the two characters then reference their mutual admiration for Samantha. Structurally, the dialogue sets up a moment of truth for Miguel — rather than showing no mercy to Robby, he shows empathy and seemingly ends the fight. Robby then lashes out with an elbow to the neck, a kick to the leg, and a spinning roundhouse that leads to a tragic fall. Robby then flees the scene after an upset Samantha cries out, “What did you do?”

By not having Robby return, Cobra Kai suggests that the character will follow the path of his father. Just as Johnny struggled upon losing to Daniel in the All-Valley Karate Championships years prior, Robby must now deal with his fear of familial abandonment — a preexisting issue for the teen, whose been abandoned by both his mother and father. Throughout the entire series, the character is presented as someone who’s looking for guidance, and now a simple twist of fate has threatened his relationships with Daniel, Samantha, and even his father.

Robby Thinks He Has No Where To Go At The End of Cobra Kai Season 2

Robby may have fled because of his mental conditioning. There’s a “fight or flight” mentality that influenced his formative years, as he was estranged from his father Johnny and had to look after himself while his mother struggled with an addiction problem (and spent a lot of her time chasing men). Still, Robby is indeed a survivor, evidenced by his willingness to train with Daniel and maintain a healthy relationship with Samantha. The penultimate episode of Cobra Kai season 2 reinforces the idea that Robby just can’t catch a break. First, he takes care of a drunk Samantha, who betrays him by kissing Miguel. Then, Robby takes Samantha to his father’s place to sober up, which leads to a confused Daniel showing up and picking a fight with Johnny. Robby has good intentions, but he’s often a victim of circumstance.

So, where does Robby go next in Cobra Kai? Prior to the school brawl, Johnny and Robby were on good terms; however, the aftermath of the Miguel tragedy could now lead to more father-son conflict. By the end of Cobra Kai season 2, Johnny has seemingly returned to his old ways after losing his dojo and struggling to emotionally cope with Miguel’s injuries. Given that Robby is directly responsible, Johnny may figuratively push his son away, if only because of poor communication skills. Meanwhile, Robby’s mother is physically and emotionally unavailable due to rehab, and Daniel may feel uncomfortable having Robby around after what happened. So, Robby — a teenager who has a long history of being abandoned — may choose to flee before someone can leave him once again. With that said, the boy’s conversation with his father, prior to the school brawl, seems to foreshadow what will happen next:

“I know you don’t want to hear it, but Mr. LaRusso was good to me. Miyago-Do Karate helped me out a lot. Look, all I’m saying is maybe you guys can learn a thing or two from each other.”

What To Expect From Cobra Kai Season 3

Cobrai Kai’s recurring theme of compromise will likely translate to Robby’s character arc in Cobra Kai season 3. Everything seems in flux after the school brawl, but Miguel could ultimately bring everybody together. Assuming that he survives, there will naturally be conflict to address amongst the main characters, but compromise will seemingly lead to clarity. For example, Daniel’s wife wants him to shut down Miyagi-Do, and rightfully so, but she may end up acknowledging its significance for the bigger picture. Miyagi-Do not only allows Samantha to learn important life lessons from her father through karate, but also helps out so many more teenagers, including Robby.

Once Amanda give her husband the OK to continue on with Miyagi-Do, Daniel will theoretically take a spiritual trip to Okinawa, the home city of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). An Okinawa subplot has already been confirmed by the showrunners for Cobra Kai season 3, and so there will likely be a thematic link to The Karate Kid Part II, in which Daniel travels to Japan with his mentor in what turns out to be a life-changing experience… a spiritual experience. During the last moments of Cobra Kai season 2, Daniel takes down a picture of Mr. Miyagi, and the next shot shows Johnny gazing out at the Pacific Ocean. Interestingly, the framing of the beach shot is similar to a visual from The Karate Kid Part II. After Mr. Miyagi loses his father, Daniel turns to his mentor and says the following:

“I feel so guilty, you know, like, he did everything for me. And I didn’t do anything for him. And then one day I realized I did the greatest thing for him before he died. I was there with him… and I held his hand… and I said goodbye.”

A dojo war will most likely serve as the primary conflict in Cobra Kai season 3. Early on, however, Daniel will probably travel to Okinawa to properly say goodbye to Mr. Miyagi, and may even choose to bring along his protege, Robby. Beyond that, the LaRussos will seemingly rally behind Johnny and provide emotional support. After all, Daniel and Johnny experienced a fun evening together (with their significant others) near the end of Cobra Kai season 2 and temporarily resolve their differences. If compromise is a recurring theme in the Netflix series, then expect that concept to apply to character dynamics in Cobra Kai season 3. The LaRussos will compromise with Johnny and his son Robby, and so they will collectively be able to properly deal with Kreese and his students.
