Something strange happened when Crusader Kings 3 got its 1.3 update last month. Mods that allowed for same-sex concubines, a feature not present in the unmodded game, all stopped working without warning. The mods even started outputting an oddly homophobic warning message to the user complaining same-sex concubines weren’t allowed.

This all turned out to be a big mistake, of course. In trying to get Crusader Kings 3 ready to duel your friends and family, Paradox accidentally broke part of the game’s mod support.

“The change, in this case, was part of a set of fixes around concubine-related behaviors in the game, leading to buggy outcomes like concubines being assigned to dead people,” Paradox told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. “In no way was this implemented in order to deliberately bar players from including same-sex relationships in the game.”

Paradox promised to look into the issue, and now that they’ve had a few weeks, they believe they’ve found a solution. In a post on the official Crusader Kings 3 forums, community manager Pariah said that “same-sex concubines should be moddable in the game in an upcoming patch prior to 1.4, and we should have same-sex marriage moddable by 1.4 if everything goes as planned.”

In its un-modded form, Crusader Kings 3 doesn’t allow for same-sex marriage or concubines. Mods have been able to get around the concubine lockout, but strangely, actual marriage has been more difficult to figure out. Paradox noted that this difficulty arose from game features that were implemented in such a way that it made altering the rules around marriage difficult to change–bizarrely mirroring arguments against same-sex marriage from years ago.

“The CK3 team, and Paradox as a whole, are very conscious of representation in our games, and same-sex lovers have been included in CK3 since launch – but we know this is not the same thing as a formal relationship,” Paradox added to RPS. “This is something we support, since allowing everyone to tell their story is a big part of our values.”

There’s no release date set for Crusader Kings’ 1.4 update, but these things tend to take a few months to work their way through quality testing.
