It looks like Deadpool, Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth, will be breaking the 4th wall and burying chimichangas on the new generation of consoles. Activision Entertainment announced yesterday that they’ll be releasing a remastered version of their 2013 superhero title, in which players take control of the Regenerating Degenerate and carve a swath of gore and snarkiness through the Marvel Universe, for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

The new version comes out on November 17 and features a lot of cool stuff, including all the DLC from the original game. But if Deadpool himself were here, this is when he’d pop out from the ads and ridicule us for missing the obvious attempt to time a release with Fox’s upcoming Deadpool movie, which stars Ryan Reynolds and hits theaters in February 2016.

The remastered game will sell for $49.99 in physical stores and digital marketplaces; the bonus DLC includes two Challenge maps and two alternate suits for the game’s Infinite Mode. The ESRB rating has also been updated to M for mature. The game itself is an action beat ‘em up and features the “meta-iculous” plotting of longtime Deadpool comics scribe, Daniel Way.

Deadpool received just mixed-to-positive reviews back in 2013, and the HD version’s bonus content isn’t exactly a barrel of chimichangas. So why bring Mr. Wilson to the new consoles? The answer is obvious to anybody who’s been paying any attention to adaptations of comic book properties in the last couple of months. Fox’s upcoming Ryan Reynolds-as-Deadpool movie has fans of the cult favorite slavering with anticipation, and Activision and Marvel are looking to capitalize on that anticipation however they can.

The thing is that while Daniel Way’s story captures the property’s meta-zany magic, that magic is noticeably absent from one crucial aspect of the game: the gameplay. Deadpool is a beat ’em up that features a “Batman-lite” combat system that—like Wade Wilson’s endless pop culture references and self-aware smack-talk, depending on your taste—gets old pretty fast. And the upgrade dynamic feels too straightforward and perfunctory to do Mr. Wilson’s antics justice.

But in the long, painful history of licensed videogames, Deadpool is far from a prime offender. It’s no Batman: Arkham Knight, but it’s no Superman 64, either. It’s faithful to the source material in spirit if not execution. For fans of the Merc with a Mouth and Daniel Way’s storytelling, $49.99 and repetitive gameplay mechanics might be a small price to pay.

Deadpool the remastered video game comes to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One on November 17.

Deadpool the movie opens on February 12, 2016; X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016; Gambit on October 7, 2016; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; Fantastic Four 2 on June 9, 2017; and some as-yet unspecified X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
