Destiny 2 Umbral Engram Guide

Darkness has arrived in Destiny 2, and players will need to spend this season helping Eris and The Drifter research these new enemies and discover what their intentions are (spoilers: probably nothing good!).ddes using the drifters Umbral Decoder. Here’s the layout of Season 11’s progress loop: Umbral Engrams, the Prismatic Recaster, and Twisted Energy, and Altered Elements.

What Are Umbral Engrams

As has become Destiny 2 tradition, a brand new semi-convoluted system of progression has been introduced exclusively for this season. Luckily, Season of Arrivals system is pretty straightforward and, once sufficiently leveled, should allow players to acquire gear with the specific stats they’re looking for.

Umbral Engrams are the new engram type this season. They are fused with dark energy and therefore can not be decrypted by Cryptarch. Instead, Umbral Engrams need to be brought to The Drifter and decoded in his Umbral Decoder. Doing so will transform the engram into a powerful weapon or armor piece from this season’s pool of gear.

How To Use The Prismatic Recaster

The Prismatic Recaster is a vendor located next to the Umbral Decoder that can be used to customize Umbral Engrams. Players will need to collect and deposit Twisted Energy in the Prismatic Recaster in order to increase the Umbral Research Rank and earn access to higher tiers of Umbral Engram customization and rewards.

Each rank of Umbral Research will reward players with access to a Gift of Light and Dark. These are upgrades that increase the rate and ways in which players collect engrams, energy, and a material called Altered Elements. There are 3 tiers with 7 gifts in each. Every gift in each tier needs to be collected before players have access to the next tier. By upgrading the Umbral Research level to 21, players will have access to all of the gifts.

Umbral Focusing is the process by which Umbral Engrams can be focused into specific armor or weapons with specific stats. There are 3 tiers of Umbral Focusing that are unlocked by increasing the Umbral Research level. Each tier offers more complex ways to customize Umbral Engrams. To focus an engram, players are required to combine an Umbral Engram with a certain number of Altered Elements.

Simply put, players need to collect Twisted Energy to increase their Umbral Research Level, then collected Altered Elements and Umbral Engrams to farm for the specific gear they want.

How To Farm Umbral Engrams, Twisted Energy, and Altered Elements

Though it’s still to soon to determine the rates, Umbral Engrams are meant to be farmable in most playlist activities. Completing the new public event Contact on heroic will guarantee 1 Umbral Engram and there are 3 engrams that can be collected for free from the Prismatic Recaster each week. Beyond that, simply running strikes, crucibles, gambits, raids, or even the new dungeon “Prophecies” should reward players with a steady stream of Umbral Engrams.

Twisted Energy is used to increase Umbral Research and is best farmed by completing weekly bounties purchased from the Prismatic Recaster. These bounties will most often involve participating in the Contact public event. Twisted Energy aren’t as easily farmable as Umbral Engrams and Altered Elements, likely in an effort to keep players from leveling up their Umbral Research too quickly. It is possible to earn 2 research levels a week by completing both weekly bounties.

Altered Elements are used to customize Umbral Engrams and are best farmed by completing daily bounties purchased from the Prismatic Recaster. Only the dailies provide Altered Elements, not the weekly or repeatable bounties. Fortunately, these bounties can be easily completed in almost any playlist or sandbox activity. Many of them require simply using a specific weapon or damage type. It is recommended that players begin each day by visiting the Prismatic Recaster in The Drifter’s room to collect these bounties. There is also a weekly quest given to players by the Prismatic Recaster that rewards a large supply of Twisted Energy. The quest is a multi-step chain that requires the completion of multiple Contact public events and playlist activities, ending in a unique story focused mission. Completing the weekly “Means To An End” quest will reward 200 Altered Elements and a pinnacle upgrade.

Umbral Research Rewards And Arrival Armor Mods

As your Umbral Research level increases each week, new rewards will become available to purchase at the Prismatic Recaster. At level 1, players will be able to purchase a brand new Arrival Armor Mod. These mods rotate daily and can be used in any armor piece from the previous, current, or next season. Some Arrival Armor Mods impose a stat penalty in exchange for a reduced energy cost. For example, the Charge Harvester mod gives players a chance to become charged with light by getting kills or assists. It only costs 3 energy, but it reduces class ability stat by 10.
