As is starting to become common with recent releases, Bethesda has announced that Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online will be receiving free upgrades for next-gen platforms. In lieu of official news from Sony, at least PS4 players can rest easy knowing their current games won’t become obsolete with a new version later this year.

Bethesda only gave us a vague hint that it will be sharing “a list of enhancements” in the coming weeks, but that’s better than nothing. On the Microsoft side of things, Xbox Series X supports “Smart Delivery,” so players will simply insert their discs/boot up their digital copies and receive downloads with all of the updates. For Sony owners, there are likely several hoops to jump through.

The wording on Bethesda’s blog makes it seem like there will be specific re-releases with all of the updates pre-packaged. That would be great for anyone that skipped out on Eternal or ESO with the next generation looming over us. With that option, you wouldn’t have to worry about downloading a bunch of extra nonsense just to get going.

As for Bethesda’s other releases, it seems the company is committed to making sure those also receive free upgrades. “While we don’t have any news to share just yet on our remaining catalog of titles,” the post reads, “we can confirm we are committed to offering free upgrades for current-generation console owners of existing Bethesda titles we bring forward into the next generation of consoles.”

That’s good news all around. I’m not sure exactly what games that statement is referring to, but it would be great to see something like Prey and Wolfenstein: The New Order running at 60 FPS on consoles. Console gamers might be fine with the way those ports were handled, but I can’t go back from the silky smooth PC performance they offer. Give me 60 FPS or give me death!

Exaggeration aside, this really is a nice move from Bethesda. It’s also something that Sony should start clarifying as we inch closer and closer to the PS5’s launch. Microsoft has already gone out of its way to detail how the Series X will handle older content, so the ball is in Sony’s court.
