EA has just announced the creation of a brand new game studio. It will be based in the Seattle area and led by the former head of Monolith Productions, Kevin Stephens.

According to EA, the new studio will be tasked with creating an open-world action-adventure game–a genre that Stephens knows well thanks to being Monolith’s studio head during the production of both Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

The name of the studio is still something that will be worked out between Stephens and EA senior VP and group general manager Samantha Ryan. The two will partner together again for the first time since the late ’90s where they both worked at Monolith.

“Kevin joining forces with Samantha and the incredibly talented teams at Electronic Arts adds even more depth to our creative collective,” said EA chief studio officer Laura Miele. “Kevin is an exceptionally talented game developer leader and we look forward to supporting him while he builds his team. As someone known for his open-world action-adventure games, we know players will be eagerly awaiting more details on this new studio and its projects.”

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Ryan said that a lot of things with the new studio are still up in the air. The studio’s name, eventual size, the exact nature of the game it will produce, and whether or not it will allow remote workers outside the Seattle area are still unknown.

Ryan also didn’t say whether this new studio will work with an established IP or create a totally new one. EA’s most recent open-world action-adventure game was Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn, which turned out pretty good. They’re currently working on a new game where you can “adventure forever,” apparently.

You could argue that Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the latest, but then we’d be arguing over what makes a game truly open world.
