Every Movie Tom Cruise DOESNT Run In

Primarily known for his action films and leading the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise runs in almost every one of his movies, but there are a few movies that don’t require Cruise to run. Doing most of his own stunts, the age-defying action star is one of the highest paid actors in screen history, and his penchant for sprinting has taken on a life of its own in memes and even Cruise’s Twitter bio, which states that he’s been “Running in movies since 1981.”

Predictably, most of Cruise’s runs have occurred in his action films, highlighted by an extended one-shot in Mission Impossible III, which sees Cruise run for 22 seconds straight without a cut. However, even in his early work, bit parts in 1981’s Endless Love and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders, Cruise runs on a field and rushes to a car, and his dramatic roles like the Oscar-nominated Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky, feature Cruise sprints: running down an empty corridor and through a vacant Times Square. There are also a few borderline cases like his light jog in Legend and his running across the stage in Rock of Ages that weren’t included here.

Having starred in over 40 movies and counting, there have to be at least a few films that let Cruise stop to take a breath. Here’s every movie Tom Cruise doesn’t run in.

Starting with Martin Scorsese’s sequel to The Hustler, most of Cruise’s non-running movies are dramas like Paul Thomas Anderson’s ambitious interconnected character study, Magnolia, and Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut. Surprisingly, there are a few action movies like Top Gun, which confines Cruise to a fighter jet, and Valkyrie that sees Cruise scheme in a failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. His supporting work in comedies like Goldmember and Tropic Thunder doesn’t provide him much opportunity to run, though Cruise does lay out some funky dance moves to the tune of Florida’s catchy club anthem “Low” in Tropic Thunder.

With Top Gun: Maverick’s trailer revealing Cruise running on a treadmill and Mission Impossible 7’s impending release, after its coronavirus-related delays, it is likely that fans will continue to see Tom Cruise running in all of his movies. However, there are still nine films that don’t involve the actor running.
