The 1997 creature feature horror flick Anaconda is the latest 1990s hit to get the remake treatment, and here’s what we know about it so far. Long before Syfy all but cornered the market on the sub-genre, creature features like Anaconda used to hit theaters fairly regularly, and like Anaconda, quite a few of them were unabashed B-movies. From start to finish, Anaconda rarely takes itself seriously, with perhaps the funniest moment being Jon Voight winking after his character gets swallowed and spit back out by the snake.

Surprisingly, the CGI special effects rendering the snake even still look pretty decent over 20 years later, which can’t be said for many other monster movies from the same time period. There are moments things begin to look a bit lik a video game, but they’re thankfully not too often. A box office smash, Anaconda went on to spawn a franchise, with one theatrical sequel, two made-for-cable sequels, and even a crossover with the Lake Placid giant killer crocodile movie franchise.

Now, Anaconda is slithering toward a theatrical remake, with the intent of wrapping itself around moviegoers, once theaters reopen of course. What does it have in store? Here’s everything we currently know.

Anaconda Remake Release Date

On January 24, 2020, it was reported that Sony is developing an Anaconda remake. Evan Daugherty, writer of Snow White and the Huntsman, has been hired to pen the script. A director and producer have yet to sign on to the project. Things right now are still in the very early stages, especially since it’s unclear when in 2020 film production at large will be able to resume. With that in mind, it’s hard to say when the Anaconda remake might release, but it seems likely to get a summer spot, just based on the subject matter.

Anaconda Remake Story Details

Writer Evan Daugherty’s take on Anaconda is said to be a complete re-imagining of the original’s concept, reportedly using surprise 2018 hit The Meg as inspiration. This seems to indicate that the characters from the original won’t be recast, and the scenario in which they come across the titular giant reptile might also be different. However, hopefully at least some of the original cast, which featured quite a few recognizable actors – including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Owen Wilson – can be convinced to make a cameo. With The Meg as an influence, one wonders if the Anaconda will be closer in size to a monster like King Kong this time out, or be of prehistoric origin.
