Coming 10 years after the first Zombieland movie released, this year’s Zombieland 2 aims to bring back the film’s fan-favorite characters for a follow-up story. Once again set in the post-apocalyptic world that has been overtaken by zombies, Zombieland 2 is officially titled Zombieland: Double Tap and will be directed by Venom’s Ruben Fleischer, who also helmed the first movie.

Zombieland was narrated by Columbus, a character with nervous energy who previously shut himself off from the outside world. When he met the pragmatic Tallahassee, the two men learned to trust one another and let their guards down. However, a conflict arose when sisters Wichita and Little Rock manipulated Columbus and Tallahassee, simply to fulfill their practical needs. Ultimately, all four characters banded together at Los Angeles’ Pacific Playland, a location that was supposed to be devoid of zombies.

But what have they been up to over the past 10 years? Zombieland features a specific sets of rules for survival. In the upcoming 2019 sequel, the same rules will likely apply, albeit with a few revisions. Here’s everything you need to know about Zombieland: Double Tap.

Zombieland 2 Brings Back The Original With Newcomers

Everything You Need to Know About Zombieland Double Tap

All four of Zombieland’s original stars are returning for Zombieland 2. Woody Harrelson will reprise his role as the Twinkie-loving Tallahassee, a man who tells jokes during the day and reflects about the past at night. Jesse Eisenberg returns as the passive-aggressive Columbus, a character who progressively evolves during the first film. Both Tallahassee and Columbus live by a code of honor, but it takes the latter some time to realize that rules are made to be broken.

Emma Stone delivers a memorable performance in Zombieland as the street-smart Wichita, and will reprise her role in Zombieland 2 alongside her on-screen sister, Abigail Breslin, who plays Little Rock in the Zombieland series. Breslin was already an established child actor when she portrayed Little Rock in Zombieland, and now she’ll return much older and in her 20s.

While Zombieland fans are looking forward to seeing all four main characters return for Zombieland 2, they aren’t the only ones appearing in the sequel. Zoey Detch, Avan Jogia, Rosario Dawson, Thomas Middleditch, and Luke Wilson have all joined Zombieland 2 in new roles. Not much is known about the new characters, but considering the zombie apocalypse is still raging, it’s possible they’re all part of a new group that the original four come in contact with.

Zombieland 2 Releases On The First Movie’s 10th Anniversary

Zombieland 2 is scheduled for an October 11 release in the United States. This is significant because the original Zombieland film released 10 years prior – on October 2, 2019. So, the sequel is essentially a 10th anniversary celebration, and perhaps the latest chapter in what could ultimately be a cinematic franchise. It’s possible that some people will see Zombieland: Double Tap by early fall. In 2009, Zombieland originally premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas – the city where Eisenberg’s character attends college. This year, Fantastic Fest kicks off on September 19, so Zombieland: Double Tap (which is named after Columbus’ second rule) may indeed be screened by the end of summer.

Zombieland: Double Tap Reportedly Introduces New Zombies

Everything You Need to Know About Zombieland Double Tap

The original Zombieland film included plenty of zombies, but the sequel may take things to a new level by introducing specific types of zombies. In the first movie, a clown zombie appears at Pacific Playland, which makes sense considering the fact that they were at an amusement park, but according to report in January, Zombieland 2 could feature more advanced zombies, such as Homers (dumb zombies), Hawkings (smart zombies), and Ninjas (deadly zombies). If the report is true, that doesn’t mean the zombies will talk, but it could complicate things for the main characters as well as the series’ newcomers. Of course, Middleditch and Wilson could be playing zombies themselves, as their roles are currently unknown.

Zombieland 2 Might Become A Ghostbusters Reunion

In Zombieland, one of the most comedic sequences was when the main characters broke into Bill Murray’s house and discovered that he was pretending to be a zombie in order to survive. Of course, he died in the film, but that doesn’t mean he can’t return in the sequel. He’s dead now, so he could easily return as a zombie. What’s more, a report from December 2018 suggested that Murray’s Ghostbusters co-star Dan Aykroyd could cameo in Zombieland 2, thus giving fans a Ghostbusters reunion of sorts. Since Ghostbusters played a part in the first movie’s story, it would be only natural for them to continue to push that bit in the sequel. This would be perfect timing too, as Jason Reitman is currently developing Ghostbusters 3 for 2020 (another Sony movie).

Zombieland 2 Doesn’t Have A Trailer Yet

After years of waiting, Zombieland 2 officially went into production in January 2019, and filming won’t wrap for at least two months or so, depending on the complexity of the shoot. So while a Zombieland 2 trailer hasn’t released yet, audiences won’t have to wait too long to get their first real look at the new sequel. Sony Pictures already debuted a teaser poster for Zombieland 2 in January, thus confirming the movie’s title as Zombieland: Double Tap, as well as giving fans their first look at the returning cast. Given the fact that Zombieland 2 releases in mid-October, the best time to expect a teaser trailer at the least would be May, at the earliest. A full trailer could release at or around Comic-Con 2019 in July.
