Square Enix has detailed how it’s going to go about removing belts in Final Fantasy 14, and the answer is that it’s not really removing them properly.

The information comes courtesy of the latest Lodestone blog post, titled “Removal of Belts in Patch 6.0”. The post details what’s going to happen to belts when Patch 6.0 drops. As it turns out, rather than being removed from the game altogether, the adjustments are more going to make them completely useless and unequippable. They’re still in the game, though.

The blog post says, “Belts will no longer be obtainable or equippable following the release of Patch 6.0. In light of this change, the Armoury Chest slots allotted to belts will be reallocated to primary weapons and rings. Belt slots on your characters, retainers, and mannequins will also be removed, as well as all belt crafting recipes.”

There’s a pretty long list of things you won’t be able to do with belts, including equipping, repairing, obtaining, and buying them. You also won’t be able to affix or extract Materia from them. If you’re not seeing it yet, belts are essentially being made non-functional, and non-useable.

After all that belt bashing, you’d expect Square to just completely remove them from the game. However, it says, “Although belts can no longer be equipped after Patch 6.0, they will not be removed from the game”. It’s not really clear why Square is choosing to keep belts in the game if they’re completely unusable, but it’s all in an effort to keep the game’s inventory management down a little bit.

One specific belt that fans have been asking about since the announcement of belt removal is the Speed Belt, which is a pretty sought-after item. Thankfully, Square addressed it in the blog post saying, “Speed belts obtained from Eureka Pagos can be exchanged for an equivalent ring by speaking with the Calamity salvager in any city.” It’s not quite a belt, but at least the functionality will be the same.
