Final Fantasy VII Remake only covers the Midgar section of Final Fantasy VII. As such, most fans realized that they weren’t going to see all of the playable characters from Final Fantasy VII in the game, as many of them don’t appear until after Midgar. The events of Final Fantasy VII Remake have left the door open for new characters to join the party, as the game is no longer bound to the story of the original game.

Final Fantasy VII has nine playable characters – Cloud Strife, Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, Red XIII, Yuffie Kisaragi, Vincent Valentine, Cait Sith, and Cid Highwind. Sephiroth also briefly joins the party during the Kalm flashback. In Final Fantasy VII Remake, the player only gets to control Cloud, Barret, Aerith, and Tifa, as Red XIII is relegated to NPC status, though he will almost certainly become a fully playable character in future games.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will likely bring back the other party members from Final Fantasy VII in future installments. The door is now open for new characters to join the party, with the first candidate being Biggs from Avalanche. It’s established that Biggs has defied his fate and survived the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake, but fans aren’t sure why? What purpose could Biggs serve in the future of the story? It’s possible that the developers have him pegged for a role in the party. It’s unclear whether Wedge survived the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake and there are also some vague hints that Jessie survived as well, so they could also be candidates for party members.

One possible candidate for a party member role is Dyne, who takes his own life in the story of Final Fantasy VII, but the remake continuity could spare him. Dyne despises the Shinra Corporation and has been driven mad by his quest for revenge, which led to him taking innocent lives. Final Fantasy VII Remake goes out of its way to establish that Avalanche is also guilty of killing innocent people during their missions, so Barret and Dyne’s encounter could end in a different way. The Final Fantasy VII Remake could have a redemption arc for Dyne, culminating at the moment where he is finally reunited with his daughter. Dyne might be too similar to Barret to make him feasible as a party member, as they both use gun arms, but that also means that the developers already have a template to work from with the character in terms of gameplay.

Reeve Tuesti is technically a member of the party in Final Fantasy VII, as he is the one controlling the Cait Sith robots. It’s possible that he could take a more hands-on role with the party near the end of the story in the remake series after the Shinra Corporation is dealt with. Reeve takes an active role in Dirge of Cerberus, as he founds the World Regenesis Organization in an attempt to make up for his past crimes. A version of Reeve who joins the party using Cait Sith gear & weaponry might actually make up for how terrible Cait Sith is in the original game.

The fact that the Final Fantasy VII Remake series is going in a new direction is extremely exciting for fans of the original game, as it opens up all kinds of possibilities for new storylines. It’s possible that the line-up of Avalanche that faces Sephiroth at the end of the game is very different than the one from Final Fantasy VII.
