Game of Thrones 10 People Lyanna Stark Should Have Been With (Other Than Rhaegar)

Lyanna Stark, mysterious sister of Ned Stark, dead mother of Jon Snow, secret wife of Rhaegar, and ruiner of the Seven Kingdoms. All the bloodshed and torment that could have been avoided if Lyanna had not run away with the heir to the throne. So many lives could have been spared if Lyanna had simply been with any other man, or woman, in Westeros.

What could have happened if the three-eyed raven sat Lyanna down and explained his visions? Who else could she have been with? Who else could she have picked? Lyanna could have been happy, successful, and alive if she’d just chosen anyone else.

10 Harrion Karstark

Harrion Karstark, eldest son of Rickard Karstark, murdered by Jamie Lannister, could have been a fine choice for Lyanna Stark. Getting together with Harrion would have further solidified the great Stark/Karstark alliance and, likely, would have kept both Harrion and Lyanna alive. The North would have further united in itself and, obviously, it would have kept Lyanna away from Rhaegar as well as in her homeland, where she belonged.

9 Jon Arryn

The man would have been old for Lyanna, just as he was old for Lysa, but getting together with Lord Jon Arryn would have united the power of The North and The Eyrie. Ned had been a ward of Jon Arryn for a time, so obviously the Stark family and the Arryn family respected one another. Their united powers certainly would have kept many other lords from trying to cause trouble and absolutely would have prevented Robert’s Rebellion and thus the War of the Five Kings. Who would have thought a political marriage could be so much more satisfying than one for love?

8 Edmure

Brandon Stark (and then Ned Stark) were promised to Catelyn Tully. It certainly united the powers of The North with The Riverlands, but if Lyssa had also been promised to Edmure, both the Lord of the North and the Lord of Riverrun would have been 100% in the same family.

It would have allowed Lyssa to move farther south (as it seems she was keen to do) and kept her close with her family (sister-in-law included). Edmure, being a bit witless would certainly have benefited from having a strong smart wife with him to help keep peace and power in the Riverlands.

7 Rodrik Greyjoy

The Iron Islands always liked to cause trouble, particularly in The North, by raiding along the coast. Rickard Stark, father of Ned and Lyanna Stark, might have made a successful alliance and kept raiders from his lands by promising his only daughter to Balon Greyjoy’s eldest son, Rodrik.

Not only would this have prevented Robert’s Rebellion and the War of the Five Kings, it likely would have also prevented the Greyjoy Rebellion, and thus Rodrik’s death as well. Rodrik and Lyanna may not have gotten along, but they would have kept each other alive.

6 Beric Dondarrion

Beric was obviously respected by the Stark’s, as Ned assigned him and his men to go after The Mountain in the first season of Game of Thrones. Beric was a lord of the Stormlands. He started the Brotherhood Without Banners to fight against any evil he saw in the world, no matter their house affiliations. This search for justice and ignoring house loyalties likely would have appealed to Lyanna (who obviously didn’t care about old house feuds). Beric was honorable, strong, lived farther south, and always had a wise thing to say. They could have been a good match.

5 Tormund

Lyanna was obviously looking for something different than the life she led as a daughter of Winterfell. Her adventurous spirit would have been well-matched with Wildling, Tormund Giantsbane. This would have been another match her family, and the rest of the realm, might not have approved of, but it would have been far less likely to start a war that encompasses the rest of the Seven Kingdoms.

Her fighting skills, as well as her beauty, would certainly have been appreciated by Tormund, and her life in the North certainly would have made her accustom to the cold beyond The Wall.

4 Oberyn

Two fiery and independent fighters joined together to unite the powers of the Seven Kingdoms’ southernmost and northernmost lords would have created quite the powerhouse to contend with. It’s easy to imagine Lyanna and Oberyn sparring in their spare time and enjoying both their time together in the north as well as the south. Together they could have prevented Robert’s Rebellion as well as offered the world an alternate power to the Targaryen/Lannister pact at King’s Landing.

3 Jorah

The respect and support that House Mormont always offered House Stark would have been well rewarded had Rickard Stark married his middle child to the only son Jeor Mormont. “The North remembers,” and The North is loyal. Uniting two ancient and respected houses would not have surprised anyone.

Lyanna also would have been shown the respect and honor she deserved from a husband like Jorah, compared to many of her other options. It also would have kept Jorah’s honor and house intact. And likely Lyanna would have enjoyed her time with the feisty Mormont women already living on Bear Island.

2 Jaime

Game of Thrones 10 People Lyanna Stark Should Have Been With (Other Than Rhaegar)

If Jaime had been married before joining the King’s Guard Tywinn probably would have been a lot less grumpy all the time, content in the fact that his heir, and favorite child, was prepared to take over Casterly Rock. A union of Stark and Lannister also would have (hopefully) prevented one of the greatest family feuds in Westeros history, and maybe even kept a tyrant like Joffrey from being born. As Jaime’s love and respect for Brienne shows, a woman who knows how to fight would likely have intrigued him, and Lyanna certainly had a thing for men with blonde hair.

1 Robert

Marrying Robert Baratheon, best friend of brother Ned Stark, and Lord of Storm’s End would have been the simplest way to prevent war and bloodshed. It’s clear Robert loved Lyanna (though obviously her feelings were not quite the same) and it’s clear he would have done anything for her. It certainly would have kept bonds strong between the Storm Lands and The North, and it would have prevented a number of other unhappy marriages. One wonders how Lyanna actually felt about Robert, who she obviously knew. How would she have compared him to Rhaegar?
