Although Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister were both vital characters within the sprawling story of Game of Thrones, no one ever suspected that they would wind up in a forced marriage, and plenty of fans didn’t expect both of them to even survive to the end of the series.

A forcibly arranged marriage isn’t exactly a great foundation for a relationship, nor is the fact that the Lannisters and Starks were mortal enemies. But were Sansa and Tyrion actually destined to be enemies, or could they have been great friends?

10 Enemies: Because Of Daenerys

While Sansa and Tyrion don’t necessarily need to hate one another, Sansa was entirely correct when she told Tyrion that their split loyalties would become a problem between them.

Tyrion was one of Daenerys Targaryen’s closest advisers and biggest supporters, and he in large part facilitated Jon bending the knee to Dany. Sansa wanted the North to be independent, as did the rest of the Northerners, so she and Tyrion were always destined to be political enemies.

9 Friends: Because They’d Be A Deadly Team

By the end of the series, both Tyrion and Sansa have demonstrated themselves to be some of the savviest, most intelligent, and most capable people in all of Westeros.

They might not agree on politics, however, they have proven that they actually can get along, and if they could find a way to gain some common ground between them then they’d be borderline unstoppable. They’re brilliant and yet constantly underestimated, which would make them quite a deadly duo.

8 Enemies: Because They Can’t Really Rely On Each Other

While Sansa recognizes that Tyrion is a much kinder man than most of the Lannisters, and while Tyrion recognizes that Sansa is a good person who wants the best for her people, the reality is that they know they can’t fully trust each other.

As Cersei would say, when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die, and an ally that can’t be trusted completely isn’t really the kind of ally that Tyrion or Sansa needs.

7 Friends: Because They Needed Friends

When Tyrion and Sansa were forcibly married, Sansa was the disgraced daughter of a convicted traitor and Tyrion was the reject of his family who got no credit for his accomplishments.

To put it plainly, they were destined to be friends simply because no one else really wanted to be friends with them. They could have undoubtedly found a few things to connect over, and at the very least, they both deserved to have a pal who appreciated them.

6 Enemies: Because They Shouldn’t Trust Each Other

Given the positions that both of them found themselves in, to be honest, it wasn’t really worth the risk of opening up to each other.

Both Tyrion and Sansa were pretty consistently in a position where one wrong move could result in a literal death sentence, so while they were both pretty decent and kind people, they also would have been pretty stupid to risk their own lives in the hope that the other was sincere and trustworthy.

5 Friends: Because They Know What It’s Like To Be Outcasts

Before King Joffrey accused Ned Stark of being a traitor and cut off his head, Sansa was pretty much the perfect lady. But afterwards, she became nothing more than a tool to control the North, and she was rejected and mistreated by almost everyone.

However, the one person who can actually relate to that feeling of rejection and mistreatment is Tyrion. That feeling of being the outcasts could have very easily been the foundation for a nice friendship.

4 Enemies: Because They Were Forced To Marry

While most marriages in Westeros are arranged, the fact that Sansa was forced to marry Tyrion so that the Lannisters could seize the North in the event that all of the men in the Stark family died is a pretty dark and unappealing foundation for any relationship.

Sansa had every right to hate Tyrion because he was being used as a tool to take her home from her, and Tyrion had every right to be angry that he was being used as a tool to take Winterfell for the Lannisters.

3 Friends: Because They’re Both Clever

As Tyrion himself said, Sansa was one person who was constantly underestimated by everyone around her. And, her pretty masterful political plays saw her outfox and outlive some of the best politicians in the history of Westeros.

While Tyrion is disregarded in almost every aspect of his being, one thing that is universally agreed upon is that he’s one of the smartest people alive. Their intellectual abilities alone could have been the start of a wonderful friendship between them.

2 Enemies: Because Their Families Were Rivals

Game of Thrones 5 Reasons Sansa & Tyrion Should Have Been Enemies (& 5 They Were Destined To Be Friends)

The most obvious reason that Sansa and Tyrion should have been enemies was because their families were literally at war with one another.

If any of the Lannisters had the opportunity to murder any of the Starks, they would do it, and if the Starks had been presented with the same opportunity they likely would have killed them all as well. Sansa and Tyrion really had no reason to trust each other, and they had very strong reasons to dislike each other right off the bat.

1 Friends: Because They Both Want To Make The World Better

While they might not always go about it in the right ways, it’s obvious that both Sansa and Tyrion really want to improve the state of the world and make life easier and better for everyone.

That is sadly a somewhat rare trait in the world of Game of Thrones, so the fact that they both share it should have created an easy and obvious connection between them that could have developed into a strong friendship.
