10 DAENERYS TARGARYEN

Game of Thrones How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

The mother of dragons is of course played by the lovable Emilia Clarke on the HBO series, but in the books, she is described to look slightly different than the beautiful actress. Book Dany is described by Varys as being too skinny and small breasted with long silver hair and violet eyes. While on the TV series Clarke is in her 20s and 30s during filming, the young queen in the books starts off in A Song of Ice and Fire as a 13-year-old girl.

It is also implied that book-Danerys is on the taller side, while our girl Emilia is pint-sized. And perhaps the most significant difference in appearance is the fact that in the books, Daenerys’ hair gets burnt off from her fire-breathing dragons when she hatches them, and it takes her a long time for it to grow back so she rocks the bald look for a while. This, of course, never happened on the show.

9 TYRION LANNISTER

When it comes to the brilliant Lannister’s appearance on the TV show, he is well kept for the most part and good looking thanks to Peter Dinklage’s good genes. Yet in the books, he comes across as deformed and monstrous.

He is described as having Targaryen white hair and a long black beard, one green eye and one black eye, a head that’s way too big for his body, and no nose due to the fact that it was chopped off during the battle at blackwater. Now that’s unfortunate!

8 ARYA STARK

While Sansa Stark gets her mom’s good looks in the novels from the Tully side of the family, Arya is described to have more of her father’s looks on the Stark side, with brunette hair and grey eyes. She is often referred to as “horseface” in the novel, implying that her face is long and skinny while on the show the actress who plays the character has a lovely doll-like round face.

Arya in the books is referred to as plain-looking, yet she doesn’t care much about her physical appearance because she’s too busy learning how to sword fight. Because she is so active, she is described to have an athletic build in the books.

7 RAMSAY BOLTON

Oh, Ramsay… We were so glad to see you go. Although we can’t deny the fact that the actor who plays the sadistic Bolton is incredibly handsome thanks to Iwan Rheon’s blessed jawline, in the books, he isn’t so pleasing to look at. In fact, he is described as being “an ugly young man, even when dressed finely.” He is described as having dry unwashed hair, sloped shoulders, and wormy looking lips. He is big-boned with a “fleshiness indicating he will be fat later in life.” Ramsay’s eyes, as they are described, are small and closed-set as well as oddly pale like “two chips of dirty ice”.

*Shivers*.

While on the TV series the actor who plays him is nearly 30, the book character is only about 19-years-old.

6 CATELYN STARK

Now, this description is rather terrifying, so be warned. As a living woman, Catelyn Stark is known for her great beauty, described as a lovely lady with red hair and blue eyes. Yet after her throat is cut and she is pronounced dead during the red wedding, things do not just end for Catelyn as they do in the show.

In the books, Catelyn comes back to haunt people as “Lady Stoneheart,” a terrifying woman with a giant red cut across her neck. In order to speak, Lady Stoneheart has to hold down the cut so her head won’t fall off. Excuse us while we have nightmares for the rest of our lives!

5 BRIENNE OF TARTH

Who in their right mind doesn’t love Brienne of Tarth? She is the most loyal knight and one of the bravest sword fighters in the series. Yet in the books, she is quite different than she is on the HBO series.

While the actress who plays her is in her 30s, Brienne is just shy of 18 when she is first introduced in George RR Martin’s books. Brienne is regarded as ugly looking with a face full of freckles and swollen looking lips, broad features, and a nose that had obviously been broken several times. They call her a “beauty” in order to mock her. The books claim that her only attractive features are her “childlike” blue eyes. (Yet in Tormund’s eyes, everything about her is beautiful.)

4 JORAH MORMONT

Jorah Mormont is played by the good-looking actor Iain Glen on the TV series, and our hearts can’t help but swell up whenever he passes his queen one of those smitten puppy-eyed looks.

Yet the king of the friend-zone isn’t as attractive in the novels- In fact, he is flat out described by George RR Martin as “not a handsome man.” It is said that he has a neck and shoulders like a bull, and he has so much hair on his arms and chest that there’s none left for his head! Poor guy.

3 YGRITTE

Ygritte is played by the beautiful Rose Leslie on the HBO series, yet in the books, she is not quite as lovely. In fact, she is described as being quite plain-looking by Jon Snow.

Not the best description of your future lover now is it! Her description in the books says her hair is so tangled that Jon wanted to ask if she exclusively brushed it every other season. Burn! It is also stated that she has a round face and eyes that are too far apart.

2 THEON GREYJOY

Game of Thrones How Each Character Is Supposed To Look

Theon Greyjoy is one of the few characters on Game of Thrones who has evolved the most. He has gone from sinister to selfless, and life was not fair to this poor man thanks to Ramsay Bolton.

In the books, Theon is described pre-Reek as a young man with black hair and an arrogant smirk plastered to his face. Yet post-Bolton torture, he adopts gray hair due to everything he’s been through and he is missing several teeth/toes/fingers due to his time spent as Ramsay’s “plaything.”

1 SANSA STARK

And lastly, we have our favorite Little Bird, Ms. Sansa Stark. Sansa is told to have her mother’s features on the “Tully” side of the family, described as having vivid blue eyes, long auburn hair, and beautiful cheekbones.

She is also tall and womanly looking, even as a young teen. In the books, she is only 11 at the beginning of the series, while on the show she starts off at the age of 13. It seems as though casting Sophie Turner was a spot-on choice for the role.
