Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is defending showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and everyone else involved with the show, after fan backlash against the final season. The hype was huge going into Game of Thrones season 8, and indeed the final run of episodes delivered in terms of epic spectacle and gory battles. However, many fans were left with a bad taste in their mouths due to the ways certain characters saw their stories wrapped up, and in general there were a lot of complaints about the season’s pacing.

As Game of Thrones’ showunners, Benioff and Weiss have naturally taken the brunt of fan abuse over the way season 8 unfolded. The showrunners have been accused of being terrible writers who didn’t understand the underlying themes that George R.R. Martin was exploring with his Song of Ice and Fire series, and they’ve also been taken to task over the way many of the show’s female characters were treated during the final episodes. Much of the backlash against the show and its two main creators came over Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden turn to evil at the last second, a turn that arguably was foreshadowed by earlier events, but also was arguably handled poorly when it finally arrived.

Now, Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is coming out in defense of Benioff and Weiss, and everyone else involved in the show. As reported by The Huffington Post, the Jaime Lannister actor told the crowd at Con of Thrones in Nashville that the criticism has been too harsh, and that everyone involved in the show did the best they could to deliver on fan expectations. Coster-Waldau said:

“For anyone to imagine or to think that the two creators of the show are not the most passionate, the greatest, the most invested of all, and to for a second think that they didn’t spend the last 10 years thinking about how they were going to end it is kind of silly. And also know that they too read the comments. And it is, even though you sit on your own and go, ‘F–king stupid writers. Assholes.’ They really ― like everyone on Game of Thrones, every single person and there are thousands ― we worked our asses off to make the best show we could for the ending.”

In the same appearance, Coster-Waldau also mentioned how he and certain of his co-stars would discuss fan reaction in their WhatsApp chat group, and how some people were genuinely affected by the backlash. “It’s just fun for you, but of course some got a little upset,” Coster-Waldau said, taking the audience to task for being too hard on the show. The actor added, “There was that kind of weird feeling of, ‘What the hell? We worked so hard.’”

Of course, no one doubts that Benioff, Weiss and everyone involved in Game of Thrones worked very hard to make season 8 the best it could be. Ultimately, it’s arguable that given the huge hype heading into the season, and the weight of fan expectation that built up over nearly a decade, there was no way for the show to satisfy everyone. That being said, there were legitimate things to criticize about season 8, including some of the storytelling decisions, as well as a few outright gaffes that created the appearance of sloppiness. In the end though, Game of Thrones did deliver an ending that was truly epic, and HBO is certainly satisfied with the massive ratings that resulted, as for a few weeks the entire world was focused on the happenings in Westeros.
