A new Ghostbusters: Afterlife clip showcases the adorable Mini-Pufts, but fans of the horror-comedy franchise may be surprised to discover that the cute characters have a surprisingly scatological origin in the Ghostbusters canon. Delayed three times due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a long-awaited upcoming sequel to the classic ‘80s horror-comedy series Ghostbusters.

Starring Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd and Stranger Things/Stephen King’s It star Finn Wolfhard, Ghostbusters: Afterlife sees Thank You For Smoking director Jason Reitman take up the directorial reins of the franchise that his father, Ivan Reitman, began in 1984. The eponymous Ghostbusters were last seen on-screen in the audience maligned 2016 reboot Ghostbusters, so the pressure is high for this belated sequel to wow at the box office after the underperformance of that earlier reboot.

As a result, it will come as no surprise to fans of the Ghostbusters movies that the latest teaser clip for Ghostbusters: Afterlife includes a cute nod to the original movies, and an adorable new Baby Yoda-style addition to the franchise canon for fans to dote over. However, while the Mini-Pufts that accost Rudd’s character during a grocery store run may seem cute, these Ghostbusters: Afterlife characters have a darker, stranger, and grosser origin than fans might have expected. Originally introduced in the 2016 one-shot comic Ghostbusters: Deviations, the Mini-Pufts are actually the bowel movements of the original Ghostbusters’ main antagonist, Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.

The Mini-Pufts were first encountered in Ghostbusters canon during an alternate timeline wherein failing to cross the streams at the climax of the original Ghostbusters left the Stay-Put Marshmallow Man able to not only survive but also leave his sentient droppings all over New York City. The miniature marshmallow monsters prove a pretty considerable handful for the Ghostbusters to contend with, with the Marshmallow Man’s turds being a set of minor secondary antagonists throughout the comic’s action. Fortunately, the comic’s ending saw them erased from existence once the timeline was set right, but evidently this latest Ghostbusters: Afterlife clip proves that the eponymous heroes aren’t done dealing with the Marshmallow Man’s effluence quite yet.

Of course, the Mini-Pufts aren’t the only important figures from Ghostbusters lore who will be putting in an appearance in the upcoming sequel. Alien star Sigourney Weaver will return to her iconic role as Dana Barrett for the first time since 1989’s Ghostbusters II, while Ghostbusters: Afterlife will also feature an appearance from Annie Potts as the group’s secretary Janine. Most excitingly for fans of the original movies, the surviving Ghostbusters actors themselves Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd will be reprising their roles as the beleaguered antiheroes of the original films in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, wherein they will hopefully have more to do than clean up the bowel movements of their old enemy, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man.
