Google is looking to solve the problem of spam and scam calls with its new ‘Verified Calls’ feature, available on the Google phone app. Unwanted calls have become an increasingly important issue for smartphone owners and many companies have been looking at ways to reduce the amount of spam calls that get through. However, Google’s approach appears to be a little different to others, as it’s focused on screening and verifying those that do make it through a spam filter.
From text messages to phone calls, spam and scams are a commonplace annoyance where someone receives a random unsolicited message, which can sometimes have financial ramifications. Someone may get a call or text asking them for money for a charitable organization, which doesn’t exist, or from a telemarketer attempting to sell them something. Many spam calls don’t even have another human on the other end and are just automated calls, generated by an autodialer — computer software which automatically dials phone numbers and connect to a pre-recorded message when someone picks up the phone. The Google Phone app, available from the Google Play store, also offers features like Visual Voicemail, which allows the user to check their messages without having to activate their voicemail, and Mini Call View.
In a blog post from product manager Gal Vared, Google revealed that it has been testing Verified Calls for a few months now. Essentially, if a business calls someone, a logo will pop up on the call screen, announcing that Google has verified the business and that it isn’t spam or a scam call. The business’s name, logo and reason for calling will also be displayed. According to Google, the reason behind the feature is to help protect users from losing money, citing a 2019 FTC report stating most people reported being contacted by scammers over the phone, and the median monetary loss from these calls was $1,000. In addition, customers won’t need to worry about security as, according to Google, no personally identifying information is gathered during the verification process. While this feature is automatically included on many Android phones, it will be available for download later this week, bringing it to even more devices.
Why ‘Verified Calls’ Matters
No one ever wants to waste their time caught up in a spam call, or lose money as a result of a scam. When even Twitter and Elon Musk aren’t safe from scams, it’s important that people are protected from these dubious interactions, which can range from bothersome to financially debilitating. With this feature, Google is looking to protect its customers from dealing with an issue later. Furthermore, it can also help businesses, as Google says that early testing has indicated people were more likely to answer a call from a verified business. In a time when businesses are struggling everywhere, every little bit helps.
Of course, with this move, Google is also giving its users a measure of control over their time, not to mention giving them a little more security over their wallet. It’s also giving them security in a different area, by assuring consumers that their private information isn’t going to be shared with its business partners. Keeping personal data private has been a hot topic lately, with major companies like TikTok and Reddit having been in the news for this very issue. Between being able to avoid spam and scams, while also being reassured that their private information isn’t being abused, people using Google’s new Verified Calls feature will be getting an added layer of surety when interacting over the phone.
