The popular extension plugin CLEO is now officially available for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, allowing users to easily implement mods or download them to fully change or expand the title. Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive revealed the long-rumored GTA trilogy remaster in October in celebration of Grand Theft Auto III’s 20th anniversary, and recently released it across consoles and PC. The remastered collection allows modern audiences to experience the classic PS2-era titles – Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – available in a single package, though the release has seen backlash from fans due to several ongoing issues such as graphical bugs, terrible performance, and lack of polish that render it all but unplayable for some fans.

Even though Rockstar Games has announced that the remaster collection will be updated and improved over time to reach the quality it originally promised, modders have also stepped in to rectify these issues, though the new trilogy’s engine is unfamiliar to some. The trilogy’s original counterparts use the RenderWare engine and can be easily modded with numerous tools and scripts for gameplay enhancements; the GTA remaster trilogy, on the other hand, uses the Unreal Engine which can be considered limited with certain scripts and can take longer to implement or create. Nonetheless, modders have introduced several fixes for the remastered collection, including new GTA protagonist models that are faithful to original designs, as well as a fix for the game’s overbearing rainfall effect.

Announced on Twitter, developer SannyBuilderDev revealed that CLEO Redux is now officially available for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, allowing both players and modders to easily download or enhance the game with modifications. CLEO is a popular plug-in that’s been used by GTA fans and modders alike for more than a decade. It allows for the extension of coding possibilities for Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Using CLEO, modders have created new locations, game modes, gameplay enhancements, and many more features that players can easily install with the plug-in instead of manual workarounds.

Issues regarding the GTA trilogy remaster across all platforms seem to be growing every day, and players have been quick to flood Rockstar‘s support site to ask for their money back. Some consumers are being met with unresolved delays or rejected inquires and have taken to review bombing the title. Every version of the Definitive Edition now sits below a 1.0 on Metacritic across multiple platforms, making it one of the worst game launches since Cyberpunk 2077.

While the modding community has been a target for Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two as of recently, mods may be the only way to redeem Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition’s disastrous launch. CLEO now allows both players and modders to experiment with modifications that could possibly fix the numerous ongoing issues the game is plagued with. It’s uncertain when Rockstar will truly deliver an update, but this new plug-in could very well allow modders to deliver valuable updates of their own, and it could even be added to the other two games in the maligned trilogy at some point in the future, letting dedicated fans make serious improvements to the entire trilogy.
