Rockstar has finally detailed the new enhancements for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, including the heavily rumored GTA 5-esque control scheme. There has been no shortage of rumors about the scope and scale of the remastered GTA trilogy, but Rockstar has finally given a way for fans to set realistic expectations about how it’ll play and what it’ll look like.

Rockstar Games announced the remastered GTA trilogy in October after months of speculation and rumors. The collection will include Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas to help celebrate GTA 3’s 20th anniversary. When it was announced, Rockstar provided very little info about what the new remasters would look like or how substantial they’ll be. All fans had to go off of was a short teaser trailer which gave fans glimpses at some of the iconic art from the three games. Now, Rockstar is ready to enlighten fans on just how much work has been done to these games.

Rockstar confirmed that developer Grove Street Games, the studio behind the previous mobile and console ports of the GTA trilogy, is working on this collection. It was also confirmed that the GTA trilogy will feature GTA 5-like controls as well as visual enhancements like resolution upgrades, enhanced textures, a completely rebuilt lighting system, weather, and reflections. There will also be new foliage and smoother surfaces to make the games look more modern. The trilogy will run on the Unreal Engine as opposed to Rockstar’s in-house RAGE engine.

Grove Street Games has also added weapon and radio wheels, improved gunplay and targeting, and updated mini-maps with enhanced navigation. Nintendo Switch fans will also get gyro aiming and touch screen controls for camera panning, zooming, and menu selection. Needless to say, a lot of work has been done to ensure modern gamers can appreciate the story and words of these old titles without being bogged down by the dated controls.

To make it even more accessible, GTA: San Andreas’ remaster is a Game Pass title. GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition will come to Xbox Game Pass on November 11, the day the trilogy launches. Similarly, Grand Theft Auto 3: The Definitive Edition will be added to the PS Now lineup on December 7, 2021, which is the release date of the physical versions of the trilogy. It’s unclear if Rockstar has added any new content or Easter eggs to the trilogy, but it should still be a blast for fans to revisit or experience for the first time.
