Director David Gordon Green says Halloween Ends will be a more intimate film that honors John Carpenter’s body of work. Halloween Ends is the final chapter of the new trilogy of Halloween films, which began with 2018’s Halloween, continued with this year’s Halloween Kills, and concludes with Halloween Ends in October 2022. The film is set to start shooting soon and will bring back Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode to face the evil of Michael Myers, aka The Shape.

The film will also see the return of Andi Matichak’s Allyson, the granddaughter of Strode, who now has a history and vendetta against Myers after the events of the last two films. Halloween Ends is written by Green, along with Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier, who will craft the finale of this new trilogy, which has thus far been very successful, especially during the pandemic. Halloween Kills opened to $49 million at the box office during a pandemic and with a shared release on Peacock, which is no small feat with all of those factors in play.

During an episode of the Empire Spoiler Special Podcast, Green opened up about his plans for Halloween Ends, which he said would be “a much more intimate movie” that would be more of an appreciation for Carpenter’s work than an ode to the franchise alone. The new trilogy ignores all the sequels to Carpenter’s original 1978 film, charting a new course for Laurie Strode and her offspring, which collides directly with the return of the infamous killer that has haunted her ever since the first film. For Carpenter, Halloween marked the launch of a tremendous career that has spanned decades and created several classic and beloved genre films to his resume. Green says the new film is an appreciation of Carpenter’s entire body of work:

“I sent Carpenter the new draft of ‘Halloween Ends’ the other night, and I said, ‘If it feels too ‘Christine,’ let me know.’ For ‘Halloween Ends,’ it’s just a love of Carpenter, you know. It’s more than just, ‘Hey, here’s a character and a community that you’ve created.’ It’s, ‘Here’s an appreciation of your legendary body of work.’”

Additionally, Green teased Halloween Ends as having less “wittiness and retro joy.” The director calls the final movie a “kind of a coming-of-age film,” stressing “a very different tone.” Green has built an eclectic career in his own right, dabbling in several different genres since he began directing. His work with Danny McBride on HBO’s Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones, as well as Your Highness and Pineapple Express, have made for a unique comedic partnership. Green’s dramatic work has also been a substantial feather in his cap, making such dramas as Snow Angels, Manglehorn with Al Pacino, Prince Avalanche with Paul Rudd, and Joe with Nicolas Cage. Now, Green appears to be sticking with horror, finishing up his Halloween trilogy before moving on to direct The Exorcist reboot, as well as the Hellraiser TV series.

While reviews were mixed on Halloween Kills, the box office performance shows that audiences are deeply invested in this new trilogy. According to Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween Ends is already being touted as a film that will “make people very angry,” but will also be “a beautiful way to end this trilogy.” It’s always tricky to find a satisfying conclusion to any trilogy, as expectations are built up for two prior films to the point that it’s near impossible to make something that pleases everyone. Halloween Ends may suffer the same fate as many trilogies in that way, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be successful regardless, especially with the finale getting a theatrical-only release.
