Throughout all of the Harry Potter films, the Ministry Of Magic is a point of contention. We know the original Minister, Cornelius Fudge, has some questionable policies and certain issues with acceptance, but we can all agree that that was a better system than the muggle torturing, death eater-run Ministry from the latter films.

Considering JK Rowling effectively set up an entire political system and parliamentary houses in the making of Harry Potter, there were bound to be a few details we overlooked within the books and films. Here are ten of them.

10 Hermione Eventually Became Minister

With Harry Potter And The Cursed Child recently gracing stages across the world, we’ve learned a lot about the inner workings of the Ministry, as well as where everyone ended up years after Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows concluded.

Well, Hermione became the Minster Of Magic. Not particularly surprising considering her academic prowess, but it’s good to be able to keep expanding our knowledge of the universe, even though the films and books have long since concluded.

9 It’s Not The Only Magical Ministry In The World

From the appearance of the French and Bulgarian witches and wizards of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang schools, it was confirmed in the Goblet Of Fire book that wizardry wasn’t something reserved for the British. As such, there are Ministries in these countries, as well as Norway, Germany and various other places. Since Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them hit our screens, we’ve also become familiar with the magical government of the USA, which is called Magical Congress.

8 They Have Their Own Version Of The Home Office

The largest and arguably most important department of the Ministry (the Department Of Magical Law Enforcement) is the equivalent to the UK Home Office. Their job is to protect wizardkind from threats. Considering it was the failings of this exact department that led to the return of Voldemort, they aren’t given a whole lot of screen time.

You’d be forgiven for not noticing that it was Amelia Bones (head of the department at the time) who presided over Harry’s trial for underage wizardry, and you’d also be forgiven for not knowing that Harry eventually went on to lead the department himself.

7 They Engage In Some Seriously Dystopian Propaganda

Even before they were fronted by the evilest dark wizard of all time, the wizarding world was governed by some really disturbing politicians. It’s kind of surprising there wasn’t more opposition against how their world was run. Between the propaganda Fudge put out against Harry, the weird 1984-like banner of Fudge hung from the atrium-like Big Brother and the obvious corruption in their legal system, the wizarding world was embroiled in some serious political turmoil that the films don’t shine enough light on.

6 They Cover The Expenses Of Hogwarts

Considering the endless buffet of food, the hiring of celebrity teachers and the operation of an entire train line, Hogwarts is quite likely to be a difficult place to run, even at the best of times. With the students not paying a single penny to attend, they have to get their money from somewhere.

JK Rowling personally confirmed that it was the Ministry Of Magic who funded the school. While this is a nice detail that wraps up any plot holes in the first few films, it doesn’t really seem like the Death Eaters’ style. Surely they’d have started to charge as the series neared its conclusion.

5 It Has Connections To The UK Prime Minister

Although only briefly mentioned by Fudge, he makes it quite clear that the Prime Minister of the UK is well aware of the existence of the wizarding world, and is kept up to date with everything going on. For example, Fudge warns the Prime Minister about Sirius Black in The Prisoner Of Azkaban.

While we don’t know the ins and outs of their communication, we do know that there is a magical portrait in the office of the Prime Minister who warns him of the Minister For Magic’s arrival. While it isn’t made particularly clear, this detail acts to explain how the wizarding world is able to coexist and govern itself alongside the muggle world.

4 We Don’t Really Know How The Minister Is Elected

You might not have stopped to think about it, but when Rufus Scrimgeour took over from Fudge, there wasn’t exactly a big election campaign. Despite the attempted progressive nature of the Harry Potter universe, there doesn’t seem to be much of a democratic process in the appointment of their leader. We eventually see Fudge ousted due to how little his people supported, so it can’t really be a dictatorship (until Voldemort gets involved) but not a lot is explained about the actual running or this Government branch. Even when Fudge leaves, its because he quits, not because his time in office is over.

3 The Ministry Is Basically What Caused Voldemort’s Return

This detail isn’t so much hidden as hiding in plain sight, but if you think about it, the Ministry Of Magic and the power Cornelius Fudge held within it, was effectively the reason Voldemort could so easily return.

Should Fudge have accepted what Harry and Dumbledore had been telling him for so long, the Ministry could have prepared to fight back (or even launched the first attack). Thanks to their incompetence, Voldemort was able to regain his strength and followers and both terrorize the UK and bring down the Ministry itself.

2 The Telephone Box Entryway Is A Real Place

While the telephone box itself was nothing more than a prop, the actual location of the red phone booth was absolutely real. We all knew it was based in London, but something many viewers don’t really think about is the fact that the placement of this box likely gives us an accurate representation of where the Ministry actually is. The telephone box itself was a few minutes from Trafalgar Square on a road called Great Scotland Yard. This suggests that the Ministry itself is just under the pavement.

1 A London Tube Station Is Part Of The Commute There

Westminster tube station is a bustling hub for transport around London. Its meters away from a multitude of tourist destinations, and apparently part of the commute those visiting the Ministry Of Magic have to make.

We see Harry and Arthur Weasley navigating its tunnels on the way to the guest entrance, with Arthur (head of the Misuse Of Muggle Artifacts department) repeatedly misusing muggle artifacts. It’s interesting to know that the wizarding world sometimes has to venture into such a central area of London.
