When Jk Rowling first released Harry Potter on the world, she had no idea just how popular it would become. Just about everybody on the planet has heard of the Boy Who Lived, Hogwarts, Lord Voldemort, and other things associated with the magical world. As a result, many theories and speculations have arisen over the years. Some are dismissed almost immediately but others are certainly entertaining to think about.

So now it’s our turn. Here are ten Potter what-ifs to make you think. If you’ve got a wand to hand, and a Pensieve handy, then you’re definitely well prepared…

10 What If Voldemort Had Never Been Discovered?

In the Half-Blood Prince movie, fans get a glimpse of Voldemort’s backstory. He’s discovered by Albus Dumbledore, who travels to an old muggle orphanage to meet the youngster, then known as Tom Riddle. This sets the wheels in motion for what’s to follow, with Tom growing up to be the darkest wizard in history.

However, had Albus not gone to meet him that day, things could have turned out very differently. It would be easy to think Voldemort wouldn’t rise but, because he was showing immense power at such a tender age, dark magic would likely have spilled out of him regardless. It might not have made a jot of difference to who he’d become but, even so, is worth thinking about.

9 What If Voldemort Chose Neville Instead Of Harry?

The details of the prophecy are somewhat glossed over in the Order of the Phoenix movie, with Warner Bros only giving fans a very brief outline of what it entails. Things are far more fleshed out in the source material, however, and it’s revealed in the book that the prophecy could have been about Neville Longbottom, rather than Harry himself.

Just imagine for a second Harry growing up with parents, a life full of bliss and love, while Neville would be the one with a target on his back. The Boy Who Lived even ponders this over but that doesn’t do much good, only upsetting him. While we love Neville as a character, we’re not sure he’d have been up for the task of defeating Voldemort once and for all…

8 What If Ron Weasley Was An Only Child?

Harry Potter 10 What If Theories That Will Make You Pensive

Harry meets Ron in The Sorcerer’s Stone, with the pair striking up a conversation on the Hogwarts Express. There, they learn all about each other. And it becomes apparent to the Boy Who Lived that Ron feels some resentment at being the youngest boy in the family, living in the shadows of brothers Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred and George.

In many ways, being somewhat distant from the rest of the Weasley clan makes Ron the extraordinary friend he is. But, had he been an only child, Harry may not have got the same warm treatment. Ron could easily have been content with his achievements and what he’s done in his life to that point. Instead, we can’t help but feel being marginalized only enhanced his determination to help Harry and make a name for himself in the process.

7 What If Hermione Granger Wasn’t So Smart?

When it comes to the brains of the heroic trio, Hermione Granger definitely takes the gold medal. She’s smarter than just about everybody in the series, constantly out-thinking wizards her own age and even older. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say only Albus Dumbledore has more going on upstairs.

And it’s definitely interesting to think of how Harry’s battle with Voldemort would have played out had Hermione not been the brains of the operation. They’d have likely died in their first year at Hogwarts, never mind all the times her quick-thinking got them out of trouble in the years that followed. One thing’s certain: the Dark Lord would have achieved his goals far earlier without the muggle-born involved.

6 What If Harry Had Become A Slytherin?

Harry Potter 10 What If Theories That Will Make You Pensive

When Harry gets to Hogwarts, he finds himself thinking he doesn’t want to join Slytherin house. And who can blame him? It’s the house that has turned out the biggest amount of dark wizards and witches over the years and, given Voldemort himself was a member, we don’t blame the hero for wanting to join a different team.

However, had Harry been sorted into Slytherin, everything could have changed. He’d have been surrounded by ambitious wizards determined to influence his mind and, without having a close bond with Ron and Hermione, may have succumbed to the temptation of evil. Especially in those years where everything goes wrong and his temper doesn’t take much to trigger…

5 What If Ron Didn’t Love Hermione?

Back to Ron and Hermione. It was the latter who actually showed feelings of love for the first time during the events of the Half-Blood Prince, reacting jealously to the news of Ron and Lavender Brown coupling up. Thankfully they grow close in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 before rubberstamping their relationship in the sequel, the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Yet if they hadn’t coupled up, it could have been disastrous for Harry. He’d have found it difficult for the pair to remain friends given how Hermione showed her feelings first and, in the end, the trio may have just become a duo. Harry would have likely been forced to choose between his two friends and, given how helpful they are, that would have made his mission of defeating Voldemort all the more trickier.

4 What If Draco Had Killed Albus Dumbledore?

Harry Potter 10 What If Theories That Will Make You Pensive

While Severus Snape kills Albus Dumbledore in the Half-Blood Prince, it’s not the original plan (as far as Voldemort and his allies know). Instead, it was meant to be Draco Malfoy who did the deed, with the Slytherin pupil given the mission after his father Lucius had failed to retrieve the prophecy from the Ministry of Magic the previous year.

Dumbledore and Draco’s own mother Narcissa had expressed their doubts about the teenager’s suitability for the job, believing it would break him emotionally. While that’s the case, however, it could have gone the other way. Draco could have become Voldemort’s golden boy and, given how self-centered he is, may have allowed that power to go to his head. Surely there’s an alternative Draco in another universe who rose up the ranks to become the dark wizard he originally wanted to be?

3 What If Sirius Black Hadn’t Been Framed?

Harry Potter 10 What If Theories That Will Make You Pensive

Sirius Black is framed for the murder of Peter Pettigrew towards the end of the first wizarding war. On top of that, he’s also charged with the deaths of 13 innocent muggle bystanders – which was actually Pettigrew’s work, of course. As a result, he spends many years of life in Azkaban, tragically years wasted.

But what if he hadn’t been framed? Sirius could have raised Harry and made him even stronger. That said, it could also have had a detrimental impact on the Boy Who Lived. Sirius was arrogant (although likable) and this could have led our hero down a dark path. Alas, we’ll never know for sure.

2 What If Narcissa Didn’t Lie?

Harry Potter 10 What If Theories That Will Make You Pensive

Towards the end of the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Voldemort is uncertain. He’s just hit Harry full on with a killing curse but is too afraid to check on whether he’s actually murdered the Boy Who Lived once and for all. Consequently, he tells Narcissa to check on the body.

When she gets over her initial shock of Harry once again surviving, she lies to her master. Now if this had backfired, we’re pretty sure our hero would have been dead meat. Either that, or a terrific battle would break out. Either thing would have been entertaining to see.

1 What If Voldemort Won?

And now, our last point. What if Voldemort had won?

Well, the magical world would definitely have been screwed. The Dark Lord would have been too powerful to stop and subjected everybody to a life of misery, much like when he was in charge of the Ministry of Magic. Any Potter allies would have likely been murdered and Voldemort would also have probably forced his law on the non-magical community as well. Yikes. Good thing Harry got the job done…
