The Harry Potter Universe is undoubtedly full of interesting characters with fantastic abilities and, more importantly, huge hearts. Out of everyone, Hermione Granger is without a doubt one of the most interesting and complex characters of the entire Harry Potter series. She makes one of the strongest progressions in the series. Readers first meet Hermione as a bossypants, know-it-all, but by the end of the series she is the true heroine we’ve all been waiting for. With an abundance of intelligence, wit, cleverness, compassion, and loyalty, calling her a secondary character would be an insult. She is the greatest witch of her age, who has not only saved herself, but the entire trio and wizarding world, and then returned to school just to prove that she is that much of a badass. Without her quick thinking and kindness, Harry and Ron wouldn’t last two days without out her. She deserves all of the attention she can get, so here are the 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Harry Potter Hero.

15 She took the fall for the troll incident

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

A moment that made a lot of fans fall for Hermione is when she took the fall for the troll incident in the Sorcerer’s Stone. For those of you who might not remember the incident: After locking herself in the bathroom because of a rude comment made by Ron, a troll finds its way in, putting Hermione in a dangerous situation. Ron and Harry eventually show up to defeat the troll, saving Hermione. Professor Mcgonagall arrives and Hermione lies and tells her that she sought out the troll herself and Harry and Ron saved her. By lying to Professor Mcgonagall, she breaks her first rule and creates one of the best friendships in the entire Harry Potter Universe, proving that she is so much more than an annoying, bossy, know-it-all.

The reason this moment is so significant is because there is nothing more that matters to Hermione than the opinion that a teacher has for her, especially if that professor is Minerva Mcgonagall. Or so fans thought. This is such a big moment in Hermione’s development as a character because it proves that friendship and loyalty will always come first. This scene in the Sorcerer’s Stone really sets the trio on a trajectory for the rest of their relationships.

14 Hermione somehow managed to get AMAZING grades and also save the wizarding world at the same time.

There’s no question that Hermione is the smartest and greatest witch of her age, but the fact that she maintained fantastic grades throughout the entire series all while saving the wizarding world as well as supporting Harry on his adventures is completely underappreciated.

In Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione is given a Time-turner (a device invented by wizards to travel through time) so that she could attend every single class Hogwarts offered for third years. In this same year she uses the Time-turner to help Harry turn back time and rescue Sirius Black and Buckbeak. During her fifth year at Hogwarts in The Order of The Phoenix, she helps create Dumbledore’s Army to train other students in defense against the dark arts under an unbearable and non-educational Umbridge rule. She then proceeds to help Harry and the gang fight actual Death Eaters in the Ministry of Magic. All the while she makes time to study for her Ordinary Wizarding Level exams, getting a total of eleven O.W.Ls. For some perspective, Harry only got 7 passing O.W.Ls.

J.K Rowling also revealed that Hermione was the only one out of the trio that went back to Hogwarts to complete her N.E.W.T.s after, you know, defeating Voldemort and saving the entire wizarding world.

13 Her role in Goblet of Fire

Hermione’s role in Goblet of Fire is where readers can see her start to grow into a more mature and loyal witch. She is without a doubt one of Harry’s biggest supporters and most helpful friends in Goblet of Fire, and she also learns a bit about herself in the process.

Despite a small fight between Harry and Ron that resulted in the two boys ignoring each other, Hermione somehow remained friends with both of them. Without Hermione’s resourcefulness and helpfulness, Harry wouldn’t have stood a chance against the three tasks the Triwizard Tournament. For example, she also stepped up to the plate to help Harry learn the Accio Summoning Charm before his first task in the Goblet of Fire so he would be able to summon his broom. All the while she develops her first relationship with Viktor Krum, and it’s no secret that her beautiful reveal at the Yule Ball left readers and fans everywhere cheering with pure joy for Hermione.

12 She is an amazing, kindhearted friend

There is no doubt that Hermione is always there for her friends. She understands how to emotionally support Ron, Harry, Neville, Luna, Hagrid, and Ginny, just to name a few. While dealing with her own problems and all of Harry’s problems, she still finds the time to help anyone that is in need.

In her third year with a maxed out school schedule that requires time travel to complete, Hermione somehow makes the time to help Hagrid research Hippogriff trials in attempts to save Buckbeak. She also risks getting detention that same year for Hagrid by helping to smuggle Norbert the baby dragon out of the castle for him. By the time readers see Hermione in Deathly Hallows, she has a complete understanding of Harry’s emotional needs. For example, she understands that Harry needed to see his parents graves, and even works up a beautiful wreath for their graves. Hermione also becomes a long running confidant of Ginny’s, knowing all about her boyfriends and her interest in Harry. She also somehow manages to stay friends with Viktor Krum after their relationships ends.

11 She can keep a secret

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

Hermione certainly knows how to keep her mouth shut, and for good reason. Hanging out with Harry Potter comes with a world of secrets. If Hermione was not able to restrain herself, their friendship surely would not have worked.

In her third year in Prisoner of Azkaban, she not only kept the Time-turner a secret from her absolute best friends, but also managed to find out that Lupin was a werewolf and didn’t tell a soul. Hermione also manages to keep Viktor Krum inviting her to the Yule ball in Goblet of Fire as a secret until that night, but again maybe this was for the shock factor. In Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore also makes Hermione and Ron swear that they will not tell Harry a single thing about the Order. This particular secret is actually hard for Hermione to keep, for she believes that it is causing more harm to keep Harry in the dark than good. Nevertheless she keeps Harry in the dark despite her gut feeling.

10 She learned that she has to break some rules in order to succeed/survive.

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

When readers first meet Hermione, she is not willing to break any rules. She was deemed to forever live by the line, “We could all have been killed – or worse, expelled.” However, as the years go on and the more adventures the trio go on, the more rules Hermione must break.

Making the Polyjuice Potion in Chamber of Secrets and sneaking around in the invisibility cloak is just the start of her rule breaking. In Hermione’s fifth year at Hogwarts she becomes the founder of Dumbledore’s Army, a secret organization that properly teaches students Defence Against the Dark Arts. Under an unbearable Umbridge rule, the students at Hogwarts were not being taught how to properly defend themselves, and with a fully powerful Voldemort on the loose, Hermione found it necessary to break every single rule Umbridge enforced. However, she doesn’t always break rules with the purest intentions at heart. In Half Blood Prince, she helps Ron win the Keeper position for the Gryffindor Team by performing the Confundus Charm on Cormac McLaggen.

9 She was seriously the real hero in Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

To start off, Muggle-born students were under attack and being threatened by the heir of Slytherin. People were being attacked left and right, so naturally as a Muggle-born student Hermione should’ve been pretty scared for her safety, right? Well, not exactly. If Hermione was scared about being attacked, she only let that motivate her more.

She devised a plan to trick Malfoy into revealing if he was the heir of Slytherin or not and then brewed a Polyjuice Potion in a girls bathroom in her second year in Chamber of Secrets. The Polyjuice Potion is not an easy potion to brew; a wizard or witch can’t just whip it up in an afternoon. The extremely advanced potion takes months of brewing and forced Hermione to steal ingredients from Snape. On top of all of this, she was the one that figured out there was a gigantic snake in Hogwarts lurking the halls before saving herself and another girl. Even in a frozen, petrified state she still managed to leave Harry and Ron the information they needed to succeed.

8 She slapped Malfoy in the face (we all wanted to do it)

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

Everyone who has ever seen, read, or heard of Harry Potter knows that Draco Malfoy is just the absolute worst; from antagonizing the trio to becoming an actual Death Eater, he’s just a super annoying dude.

Perhaps one of Hermione’s greatest moments is slapping Draco Malfoy in the face in the Prisoner of Azkaban. However, seeing Hermione punch Malfoy right in the face in the movie version may have been just a tiny bit more satisfying. Malfoy was basically the person that helped sentence Buckbeak to death by exaggerating his “hurt” arm in Prisoner of Azkaban. So when he and his henchmen show up to laugh at the execution Hermione rightfully loses it on the “foul, evil, loathsome, little cockroach.” Perhaps she was just getting back at him for calling her a mudblood, or maybe she was just exhausted from all the time travel and seriously annoyed with his existence, but either way it was fantastically enjoyable and totally bad ass.

7 She became a strategist

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

In the beginning of the Harry Potter story, Hermione is not necessarily the best strategist. In Sorcerer’s Stone, Hermione is the one that loses her cool when it comes to the Devil’s Snare forgetting she was a witch for a moment. She also can’t fully follow the chess game in the same instance. Hermione cleverly catches the nasty reporter Rita Skeeter as an unregistered Animagus in Goblet of Fire, and then devises a plan to blackmail Skeeter into publishing the truth about Harry and Voldemort in Order of the Phoenix. Not to mention the entire forming of Dumbledore’s Army that very year. She later leads Umbridge into the Forbidden Forest to get out of a tricky situation.

The most impressive strategic work of Hermione Granger truly shines in the Deathly Hallows. Not only did she had an escape plan in place at The Burrow in case Death Eaters or rouge ministry workers showed up, but she literally planned out the entire hiding. She packed a bag full of clothing, books, camp equipment, medical supplies, and various things they might need for their long time in hiding. She also thinks up a list of locations for the trio to travel to as well as learning all of the necessary spells to keep them guarded from muggles, snatchers, and Death Eaters alike. When they are eventually kidnapped by snatchers, she is the fastest thinker and hits Harry with a spell that changes the appearance of his face.

6 She learned that she can not decide what is best for anyone

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

Hermione started the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.) in an attempt to help free the house-elves working in the Hogwarts castle and spread awareness about house-elf liberation.

After learning that house-elves make the food at Hogwarts and do not work for wages, Hermione starts S.P.E.W and tries to get members to join in an effort to educate wizards and liberate the house- elves. She quickly finds out that the house-elves are happy working at Hogwarts, and discovers the consequences of not working by witnessing the drunken mess that becomes of Winky. Even though Hermione so desperately wanted to set the houselves free, she eventually accepted that she can’t change their desire to work. However, J.K. Rowling did reveal that Hermione works for the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the future, and apparently continues working on S.P.E.W to give house- elves fair wages.

5 Embraces her compassionate side and pretty much turns it into a recurring measure of strength.

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

From the start, it’s obvious that Hermione is kind and compassionate. Readers first meet her in the Sorcerer’s Stone while she’s helping a rather helpless Neville Longbottom search for his missing toad. She then moves on to provide a happy home for Crookshanks, a smushed-faced cat, who no one wanted to purchase from the shop.

Even when Kreacher was screaming vile slurs at Hermione, she still found a way to be kind to him. By doing this, she builds a bridge of civil communication between the trio and Kreacher. In return, Kreacher cooks for the team, tells them about Regulus Black’s involvement with with the locket horcrux, and even helps Dobby kidnap Mundungus Fletcher. It’s also important to note how open Hermione was with her emotions. She allowed herself to experience sadness, anger, and frustration, but never let those overcome her and get in her way. Hermione genuinely understood the importance of opening up, which is why she was such a good friend to Harry.

4 She has an underrated amount of strength

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

In Deathly Hallows after being kidnapped by Snatchers, Bellatrix Lestrange repeatedly used the Cruciatus Curse on Hermione to torture her into admitting they stole the Sword of Gryffindor. Hermione’s screams of pain could be heard all the way in the dungeon by Ron and Harry. Not to mention, the Unforgivable Curse is known to cause so much pain that the repeated use drives even fully trained wizards insane.

Shortly after being tortured, Hermione helps devise a plan where she has to transform into the woman who tortured her and break into her Gringotts Bank vault to steal a horcrux. The idea of impersonating someone who tortured her must have been extremely uncomfortable and hard to handle. However, Hermione does not let that stop her, and she understands that it must be done in order to complete the plan and obtain the horcrux. This enormous act of strength often goes unnoticed when talking about Hermione.

3 She’s Loyal

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

Hermione has shown loyalty to all of her friends throughout the series, especially Harry and Ron. However the biggest moment of true loyalty has to be the moment she decided to stay with Harry during the search for horcruxes in the Deathly Hallows.

The trio was constantly cold, hungry, lonely, and with the locket horcrux around their necks, angry and full of self doubt. When Ron, who was affected the most by the horcrux, became overcome with the exhaustion of the constant search and decided to leave, Hermione could have easily left as well. However, she stayed with Harry and continued the search even though it would have been much, much easier to leave. Continuing on without Ron was very hard for her; by this point in time it is quite obvious that they care for each other very deeply. Hermione even cried herself to sleep a lot of nights and the sadness seemed overwhelming. However, she did not let this get in the way of their quest; she continued on with great strength.

2 She makes the biggest growth as a character

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

Hermione makes one of the most beautiful changes out of any character in the series. She grows from a rather annoying know-it-all to a humble, intelligent, thoughtful witch. It’s undeniable that Hermione has an overwhelming thirst to prove herself in the wizarding world. Being a Muggle-born witch in a world full of prejudice, purebloods like Draco Malfoy could not have been easy to deal with. Perhaps this is what fuels her thirst to always be the absolute best at magic. After getting her Hogwarts letter, Hermione purchased the required school books and then some. She then proceed to read through all of them and memorizing them all by heart before the term even started, and simply hoped that would be enough for her to get by. She raises her hand to every question in every single class and does extra work proving that maybe she just might be a bit of a bossy, know-it-all.

But by the time readers leave Hermione at the very end of Deathly Hallows, she has become a witch who is so full of self confidence that she understands answering every single question isn’t necessary to prove she’s deserving of being a witch, despite how fun it may be. Oozing with intelligence, she chooses her words very carefully as a means to not upset anyone or come off as a know-it-all. She is wise beyond her years and the most humble and clever witch around.

1 She put her own needs second

Harry Potter 15 Reasons Hermione Granger Is The Real Hero

Hermione has always been known to put others needs before her own; she is without a doubt selfless. However, the most magnificent act of selflessness that goes rather unnoticed is the act of erasing all of her parents memories of her existence and making them believe they were different people in the Deathly Hallows for their own safety and then made it seem like it wasn’t that big of a deal. In the film, Hermione uses the spell called obliviate, which literally makes it so the memory is gone forever. However, J.K. Rowling revealed that this isn’t quite the case. Hermione actually just makes her parents think that they are different people with different life desires, and later in life tracks them down and brings them home. Although charming them this way allows her to turn them back, it was still very risky business. She could have not been able to track them down and perhaps not had the ability to turn them back. This was a risk she was willing to take; she’d rather have them safe and not remembering her than at the risk of Death Eaters finding and torturing them.
