With the 20th-anniversary special releasing soon on HBO Max, it’s no question that Harry Potter has been on the minds of many recently. The ongoing debate amongst friends about which Hogwarts house is the best is a conversation that’ll no doubt live on beyond the next twenty years as well.

Each house has its defining characteristics, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any overlap amongst their students. For example, Gryffindors are best known for their bravery or courage, but this trait can certainly be found in other houses as well.

10 Nymphadora Tonks

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Tonks attended Hogwarts just before the Golden Trio walked the magical halls and consistently displayed her bravery since then. After she left school, she chose to become an Auror to fight against dark wizards. A core member of the Order of the Phoenix, Tonks was one of the heroic witches that gave her life during the Battle of Hogwarts, just shortly after giving birth to her child Teddy Lupin. Every action she made throughout her lifetime, including marrying a werewolf when everyone deemed it too dangerous, proved how courageous she truly was. Considering her mother Andromeda Black went against her family ideals to marry Edward Tonks, one could even say bravery runs in the family.

9 Newt Scamander

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Though he didn’t actually complete all seven years at Hogwarts, Newt Scamander was sorted into Hufflepuff when he was 11 years old. Newt was expelled after taking the blame for one of Leta Lestrange’s, a close friend of his, experiments that went wrong and threatened the life of another student. He worked with the Ministry of Magic for a few years before writing Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, propelling his career as an esteemed Magizoologist forward. Newt also played a large role in the Global Wizarding War, facing off against Gellert Grindelwald on multiple occasions. His fear of working behind a desk for the entirety of his life may have given him his sense of adventure, but the bravery that fear developed got Newt through it.

8 Cedric Diggory

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Cedric Diggory is a character loved by many particularly because of his time in The Goblet of Fire. While much is unknown about his time before the fourth installment of this series, it is known that he served both as a Hufflepuff prefect and the captain of the Hufflepuff quidditch team when he decided to put his name in the Goblet of Fire to compete in the Triwizard Tournament as a sixth year. Cedric’s name was selected and he fought valiantly before dying during the final task at the instruction of Voldemort himself. The audience witnessed him deal with several problems head-on in the span of a year and he will therefore be remembered for the courage he displayed in the face of danger.

7 Professor Silvanus Kettleburn

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

While some may view him as careless or reckless, some see Silvanus Kettleburn as a brave soul. He was sorted into Hufflepuff house as a first-year student and then went on to become the professor for Care of Magical Creatures. His love for magical creatures led to the many injuries Kettleburn experienced over the years. By the time Kettleburn stepped down from his position at Hogwarts, he only had one and a half of his original limbs on his body and was missing an eye completely after various encounters with an array of magical creatures, hence the careless nature some wizards tie to his name. Kettleburn continued to visit dragon sanctuaries after his retirement and, though he didn’t physically fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, he did throw his own Flobberworms out his window from his Hogsmede home at Death Eaters infiltrating the grounds. Was he a bit foolish at times? Possibly, but that doesn’t make him any less brave either.

6 Professor Pomona Sprout

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Pomona Sprout was sorted into Hufflepuff and then proceeded to excel in Herbology during her time at Hogwarts, so it was no surprise that she later returned to the school to teach the subject, eventually becoming the Head of Hufflepuff house as well. Though she had previously been a more behind-the-scenes helper, such as when she brewed the Mandrake Restorative Draught during The Chamber of Secrets, Sprout took the initiative to physical get involved During the Battle of Hogwarts.

She led a group of students to fight against dark forces in the best way she knew how: Herbology. Devil’s Snare and other dangerous magical plants were thrown at Death Eaters attacking the school grounds during the battle, demonstrating that Sprout had the courage it took to adapt under extreme pressure to fight for the things she cares about.

5 Teddy Lupin

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Edward “Teddy” Lupin was born towards the end of the Second Wizarding War, his parents Tonks and Remus Lupin giving their lives during the Battle of Hogwarts. The orphan was raised by his grandmother Andromeda and was often surrounded by his godfather Harry Potter and his friends. As previously mentioned, bravery is a trait that seems to run deep in this family and Teddy is no exception. Though he unexpectedly gathered attention from Daily Prophet reporter Rita Skeeter, Teddy still wasn’t afraid to be himself and do whatever he pleased, metamorphmagus and all. He even advanced in his studies to the point of becoming Head Boy in his seventh year. Little is known about the entirety of Teddy’s life, so it is possible that he was simply a carefree teenager, but this seems unlikely when considering who his parents were.

4 Susan Bones

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Susan Bones was sorted into Hufflepuff the same year Harry, Ron, and Hermione were sorted into Gryffindor, and it could be argued that she was forced to develop a sense of bravery before the trio due to the events that occurred during her childhood. The majority of the Bones family died in the First Wizarding War, including both of Susan’s grandparents, her aunt and uncle, and her cousins. These events pushed Susan to join Dumbledore’s Army during her fifth year and to fight against Voldemort and his forces during the Battle of Hogwarts. She may not be the most well-known student at Hogwarts, but she was a brave one nonetheless.

3 Theseus Scamander

Theseus Scamander, the older brother of Newt Scamander, was also sorted into Hufflepuff and demonstrating his courage from the start. During the time of the muggle’s First World War, Theseus was amongst the wizards that defied the Ministry to help the muggles fight. His effort was so great that he still gained notability as a fighter and earned his spot as Head Auror during the Global Wizarding War. On top of his contributions to these wars, Theseus continued to showcase his natural sense of bravery as he actively fought against Gellert Grindelwald.

2 Hannah Abbott

Harry Potter The 10 Bravest Hufflepuffs

Hannah Abbott was also sorted into Hufflepuff the same year the Golden Trio was sorted into Gryffindor. In addition to joining Dumbledore’s Army, Hannah also became a prefect during her fifth year at Hogwarts.

She missed her sixth year due to her mother passing away, but returned to school for her seventh year and didn’t hesitate to rejoin the reformed Dumbledore’s Army under the rule of Neville Longbottom, her future husband. Her suggested courage and kindness didn’t end after the Second Wizarding War, as she eventually went on to pursue a career as a Healer.

1 Ernest Macmillan

Ernest “Ernie” Macmillan was sorted into Hufflepuff alongside Susan Bones and Hannah Abbott. He became both a prefect and a member of Dumbledore’s Army during his fifth year at school and his bravery began to grow apparent from there. An act of courage by Ernie that is most notable is during the Battle of Hogwarts when he spoke on behalf of all students wanting to fight to protect their halls by asking Professor McGonagall, “And what if we want to stay and fight?” after she had instructed prefects to lead students to evacuation. There was an eruption of applause for his question and he, as well as the students that agreed with him, went on to fight in the battle. It’s statements like this throughout the series that heavily imply Ernie is also as brave as any Gryffindor.
