The Bayonetta series is among the quirkiest beat ’em ups out there and has become beloved for its bizarre storytelling and blisteringly fast-paced combat. Since Bayonetta 2’s release in 2014, series developer PlatinumGames has launched titles like Transformers: Devastation, Nier: Automata, and Astral Chain. However, we weren’t told too long ago that Bayonetta 3 would be heading to the Switch. It’s been a while now with no word on its whereabouts, and it’s high time fans get an update.

Bayonetta 3 was originally announced at 2017’s The Game Awards with an ambiguous trailer that showed Bayonetta in action, firing away with her signature high heel handguns. It was revealed in the trailer that it was being developed exclusively for Nintendo Switch with no release date given, though a prevailing tentative release date had been the year of 2019.

This changed altogether when a financial report from Nintendo earlier this year gave Bayonetta 3 a release date of TBA. While this didn’t necessarily suggest that it wouldn’t be coming in 2019, the indicator was there, and at this point, Bayonetta 3 will either be releasing sometime in 2020 or years beyond.

Whatever the reason, Bayonetta 3 is surely at the top of many Switch owners’ most-anticipated lists, which likely leads to a lot of frustration, especially given the release of Astral Chain; a unique title whose announcement and release occurred during the development of Bayonetta 3.

While next year seems like a reasonable estimate for Bayonetta 3’s launch, there is still a degree of uncertainty. After all, PlatinumGames is also away at work on Babylon’s Fall, which had been shown during the most recent State of Play. However, a release date has yet to be announced for this title as well.

PlatinumGames does have a penchant for bringing its audiences high-quality titles. From early treasures such as MadWorld to the beloved Bayonetta series to Nier: Automata, PlatinumGames is known for its polished content. While an update would be great, the developer just might need space to create the best content it can, which may well be the case with Bayonetta 3.
