Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra can expect much more Avatar-related content in the future, as Nickelodeon announced the launch of Avatar Studios, a division that will focus solely on creating content based in the world of Avatar. The studio will produce movies and television shows for Nickelodeon and Paramount+, as well as third-party platforms and theatrical releases.

Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, co-creators and executive producers of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, will lead Avatar Studios together as co-chief creative officers. The studio’s first project is an animated theatrical movie that enters production in the second half of 2021. No plot details have been released yet, and no television shows have been formally announced. However, Avatar Studios will definitely be revisiting the immersive world of Aang and Korra in new original content, giving fans the chance to fall in love with bending and the Four Nations all over again.

A lot has changed in the twelve years since The Last Airbender’s finale. Young adult and children’s animation has expanded in scope and maturity, and the Avatar franchise has grown even more popular after its release on Netflix. This could mean more creative freedom for DiMartino and Konietzko, which could take Avatar Studios’ movies and shows to new heights. Here are the ways these upcoming Avatar works could differ from the original series, and why.

How The Avatar Series Were Limited

How Avatars New Movie & Shows Will Be Different From The Original

Despite The Legend of Korra having more freedom to explore mature themes than The Last Airbender, both series were still limited by production demands. The Last Airbender was given a three-season order with a fully planned story, which allowed it to reach a satisfying conclusion. The Legend of Korra’s journey was a little messier: it was always uncertain whether it would get more seasons, and Korra’s storyline was more unevenly placed as a result. Halfway through The Legend of Korra season 3, Nickelodeon stopped airing the series on television and released the last of season 3 and all of season 4 online. Nickelodeon also slashed season 4’s budget and gave DiMartino and Konietzko the choice between firing some of the crew or making a clip show – they chose the latter, which became The Legend of Korra season 4, episode 8, “Remembrances.” Many viewers of the show considered this to be sabotage on Nickelodeon’s part.

Despite its treatment of The Legend of Korra while it was still airing, it’s clear that Nickelodeon is putting its trust back in DiMartino and Konietzko’s ideas with Avatar Studios, especially considering that they will be running the division. Since both series resurged in popularity after being released on Netflix, it’s clear that the shows still resonate with fans. Avatar Studios may allow future shows and movies more creative freedom, limiting them far less than The Legend of Korra.

Animation Has Improved So Much Since Korra Ended

How Avatars New Movie & Shows Will Be Different From The Original

The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra were both groundbreaking animated shows that helped prove that children’s animation isn’t “just for kids” — there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this medium. Since The Legend of Korra ended in 2014, animation geared towards children and young adults has improved even further. Obviously, many of these improvements are technical, but as series began to trust that children and young adults can handle more mature themes, their subject matter became even deeper and richer. Take recent shows like Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts or Infinity Train — both series that explore vibrant worlds and aren’t afraid to face characters’ traumas head-on. The risks pay off in a big way, with strong and memorable moments that stay with viewers long after the show is over.

It was these kinds of risks that may have forced The Legend of Korra online, but now such narrative choices have become more prevalent and more widely appreciated. This means that new Avatar movies and shows can and should continue to take risks with their subject matter. Again, given that Nickelodeon has given DiMartino and Konietzko control of their own full division, it’s likely that they will be less limited in this regard and can continue to push animation in new directions alongside the many other excellent animated shows currently in production.

What Future Avatar Movies & Shows Can Do Differently

There are several things that future Avatar movies and shows can do differently, and one of the first that comes to mind is highlighting its LGBTQ+ characters. Korra and Asami’s romantic relationship was confirmed by the show’s creators after the finale aired, but there were limits on what Nickelodeon would allow them to show. Their relationship unfolds further in the comics, where it is also revealed that Avatar Kyoshi was bisexual. Future Avatar movies and shows could explore Korra and Asami’s relationship, or introduce new LGBTQ+ characters, especially since LGBTQ+ representation has become much more common in animated shows, with examples including She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Steven Universe, and Adventure Time.

New Avatar projects could also be more mindful of casting voice actors of color. The Four Nations are inspired by Asian and Indigenous cultures, but the voice casts of both series are predominantly white. Given recent voice-acting controversies, including Jenny Slate and Kristen Bell stepping away from voicing biracial characters, it’s important that Avatar Studios should cast Asian and Indigenous voice actors in new projects.

One last thing that these new movies and shows can do differently is not solely focus on Aang or Korra. Avatar Studios gives DiMartino, Konietzko, and their whole team freedom to expand the Avatar universe in any way they like. The world is so full of history and lore, with many other past (or future) Avatar’s journeys to delve into. New movies and shows don’t even have to be limited to stories about the Avatar: they could address groups like the White or Red Lotus, or explore what the world was like during the Hundred Year War when there was no Avatar. The possibilities are endless, and Avatar Studios is proof that Nickelodeon sees the potential in expanding the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender and in giving more creative freedom to its original creators.
