How will James Holden and his allies take down Marco Inaros’ Free Navy in The Expanse’s final season? Season 6’s premiere episode drops several massive hints. In season 5, The Expanse charted the rise and rise of Marco Inaros. An extremist member of the Belt’s OPA from a young age, few took Marco’s early terrorism seriously at first. Alas, they underestimated his ambition, charisma, and ruthlessness. Striking a deal with Martial rebels, Marco was able to inflict grievous damage upon The Expanse’s Inner planets of Earth and Mars, and has now either convinced or coerced virtually every other Belter faction to join his cause.

When The Expanse season 6 begins, Marco is at the top of his game. Earth remains reeling from his asteroid strikes, while Mars continues floundering in economic oblivion, giving the Free Navy free reign over the Belt. Collecting Belter factions like Thanos gathering Infinity Stones, Marco has also amassed a powerful force that Earth and Mars aren’t currently in a position to defend against. Posing an unprecedented threat, The Expanse season 6’s premiere indicates Marco’s victory is now only a formality. Having said that, several key moments in “Strange Dogs” foreshadow fatal weaknesses that could lead to the Free Navy’s downfall.

The most obvious of these weaknesses is Filip’s rapidly-eroding psyche. As the son of Marco Inaros, Filip has always suffered from a massive ego and an inferiority complex. Since briefly reuniting with his mother in The Expanse season 5, however, Filip has shown a brand new trait – inner conflict. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that the violent crimes Filip commits in the Free Navy’s name are nothing more than stunts performed in hope of gaining his father’s approval. Also obvious is how the spirit of his mother is fighting for control in Filip’s mind. Not only does this explain his downward spiral in The Expanse season 6’s premiere (acting despicably toward a bar worker, shooting his best friend), but also why Filip suddenly shows interest in the Belt’s food production. He’s caught between the violent ways of his father, and the gentler influence of his mother.

Filip’s mental tug-of-war could push him toward betraying his father in The Expanse’s future. If the Rocinante needed an inside man within the Free Navy and Naomi made the request personally, could Filip resist her plea? Filip is perhaps the one person Marco wouldn’t suspect of betrayal, so Filip going rogue and switching sides could deal a sizable blow to his dad’s ambitions. Compared to the Expanse book series, Filip’s downfall has been far more volatile – a future change of heart could be the payoff that justifies his live-action journey.

From Filip to flippancy, the second big nod toward Marco Inaros’ defeat in The Expanse season 6’s “Strange Dogs” is the Free Navy leader’s attitude toward food supplies. When Marco sought to unite the Belt under his banner, he envisioned crowds cheering his name, and a massive fleet hanging on his every word. Marco clearly didn’t consider ruling the entire Belt would involve managing resources, looking at spreadsheets, and keeping Belter bellies full. Marco’s refusal to grapple these subjects is exposed during his conversation with Ceres Station administrator, Nico Sanjrani, who assures Marco that failure to take “boring” stuff seriously means Belters will begin going hungry and thirsty sooner, not later.

Like Filip’s instability pushing him toward his mother, Belters going hungry could push them toward Camina Drummer in The Expanse season 6. Drummer is rapidly becoming the only option for Belters wanting to avoid the underside of Marco’s thumb. If he can’t keep the masses happy, Drummer’s roster of rebels will swell and potentially become a bigger headache for Marco than food production spreadsheets. Between unhappy followers and an unhappy son, The Expanse season 6 is signaling how Marco could go down.
