Jeffrey Dean Morgan says Negan’s story may continue after The Walking Dead airs its final episode. Morgan’s character and his iconic barbed-wire baseball bat, Lucille, have been major players since their introduction in the season 6 finale, which led to the brutal deaths of Glenn and Abraham. Following the events of “All Out War,” the defeat of the Saviors, and Negan’s roughly seven-year imprisonment, the charismatic antagonist has been on a redemptive arc; essentially redeeming himself to everyone but Maggie who, understandably, can’t get over Glenn’s death.

In the season 10 finale, “Here’s Negan,” viewers were treated to Negan’s long-awaited origin story featuring his late wife Lucille (played by Morgan’s real-life wife, Hilarie Burton). The episode centered on the original Lucille’s battle with cancer and Negan’s struggle to keep her alive in a post-apocalyptic world. She ultimately dies by suicide, her death propelling Negan towards his vicious, barbed-wire antics. “Here’s Negan” has proven massively popular and bodes well for the fan-favorite character as AMC is already feeling out audiences’ interest in other Negan-centric projects. With The Walking Dead’s 24-episode finale season premiering in August, the network is gearing up for life beyond the flagship series.

In an interview with CinePop, Morgan was asked about missing The Walking Dead when it ends. Being that the actor lives/shoots in Georgia seven to eight months out of the year, he admitted he’ll miss it being a part of his life. However, Morgan seemed optimistic about the possibility of continuing Negan’s story outside of season 11:

“It’s going to be the end of Negan as we know him on The Walking Dead but we may see Negan down the line somewhere else.”

This isn’t the first time Morgan has hinted at the possibility of a Negan spinoff series—which wouldn’t be a first for the Walking Dead universe. The show’s popularity has already led to two spinoff series including Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond as well as the upcoming Daryl and Carol spinoff and anthology series, Tales of the Walking Dead. On top of that, the upcoming Walking Dead movies, exploring Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) departure from the series, begins filming soon. That said, all of The Walking Dead’s major players seemed poised to “survive” the show’s final season and Negan could appear in any of the aforementioned projects.

The Walking Dead’s final arc, like the comics, appears to be dealing with The Commonwealth. The series has a history of substituting storylines and may very well do the same thing with Negan. At this point, Maggie wants Negan dead, and killing him feels like the right way to close out his redemptive arc. However, instead of having Maggie do it, the writers may decide to give Negan Rick’s storyline from the comics. This would allow Negan to go out as a hero and fuel enthusiasm for a series/movie exploring more of Negan’s backstory before meeting Rick’s group. Whether he lives or dies, plenty of storylines will come to a head when the final season concludes in 2022.
