It seems every game company is jumping on the NFT bandwagon at this point. Konami has now voiced interest following Square Enix, Epic Games, Discord, Ubisoft, and EA doing the same. The only ones to have firmly said ‘no’ so far are Valve and Double Fine.

“As we move into the future, our business fields will continue to expand with the advancement of electronics such as mobile devices and home game consoles, as well as with the emergence of new distribution platforms that utilize cloud technology,” Konami said in a statement. “What’s more, with the evolution of technologies such as AI, 5G, and NFTs (non-fungible tokens), as well as the increasing recognition of esports as a sporting event, we expect the market to be revitalized by inventive new ways to enjoy games.”

It’s not as clear cut as Ubisoft starting work on blockchain games or Epic hosting the very same on its platform, but the vocal interest is enough to spark concern. NFTs are bought and traded using cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin that causes incredible amounts of damage to the environment due to crypto mining. With so many game developers getting into NFTs, blockchain, and cryptocurrency, the spreading of these pricey JPEGs could be incredibly harmful in the real world.

Gaming and NFTs can go hand-in-hand in a variety of ways, but the main focus right now is on blockchain and cosmetics. The idea is that you would be able to buy in-game skins that would be ‘yours’ in terms of actual ownership.

You would be free to sell that skin, the definitive version of it, to other players using cryptocurrency. You could also take it out of the game.

Meanwhile, blockchain would mean that you could buy games in segments, thus actually ‘owning’ parts of a game rather than a copy of it. However, as stated earlier, the environmental implications of this model are dire. Cryptocurrency is responsible for millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Yet while voicing interest in NFTS, developers are failing to address this concern.
