2K Games has delayed the release of Mafia: Definitive Edition to September 25 due to complications from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. In a post on Twitter, developer Hangar 13 gave a lengthy explanation of the expectations it has for the remake and how it doesn’t want to mess up this opportunity to revisit a classic.

“Though we’d originally planned to release the game one month earlier on August 28,” reads the tweet, “finalizing everything in time for that launch date has become increasingly challenging due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, and the last thing we want to do is compromise the quality of the experience.”

That’s a smart move, especially given the recent history of the Mafia series. Both Mafia 2 and 3’s “Definitive Editions” were released with a ton of bugs that hindered the experience on consoles. The general reception around 3, as well, hasn’t changed much since its release in 2016. A lot of riding on this remake to bring the Mafia series back to prominence.

We haven’t yet seen any footage of Mafia: Definitive Edition, but that will be changing soon. 2K is planning to reveal a first-look at the remake on July 22, 2020. Haden Blackman, president of Hangar 13, will be holding an in-depth look at the changes to the city of Lost Haven and how Definitive Edition will hopefully live up to its title.

Back in 2002, the original Mafia was like a glimpse into the future. Featuring the most realistic and detailed world seen in gaming up to that point, many didn’t realize how little would change since its release. Games are still catching up to a lot of the details the original had almost 20 years later.

To say the reputation that game has is sacred is maybe overselling things, but a lot of people have insanely fond memories of it. 2K has a lot to prove with Mafia: Definitive Edition. I’m still cautiously optimistic because there are definitely some aspects that could be tweaked from the first game. As long as all of the charm, attention to detail and solid pacing are kept intact, Definitive Edition may be an excellent way to revisit this gem.
