March 2021 seems to be a quiet month for video games, but there are some highlights to look forward to; one looks like a fever dream led by long-time Sonic the Hedgehog producer Yuji Naka.

It Takes Two

Josef Fares, better known as the “F**k the Oscars” guy from The Game Awards, is back with another co-op adventure. This 3D platformer has you and a friend trying to repair a couple’s relationship with whacky levels and genre-bending gameplay mechanics. It will also feature a funny script, which is something we certainly need within a pandemic-ridden world. The cool thing is that if one owns a copy, another person can gain access to the game through a Friend’s Pass just like A Way Out.

Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise will be rampaging the Nintendo Switch with an all-new world to explore. You’ll be working in a ninja village called Kamura to take out monsters in the surrounding area. The stakes have been raised as a new monster has appeared and threatens to bring another calamity to the world. Just like its older brother, Monster Hunter World, you can join three online players on quests and get some awesome weapons and armor for defeating bosses of various sizes. You can also a ride a dog called a Palamute. Nintendo are going all in on Monster Hunter Rise, and there will even be a console dedicated for the game’s release.

Tunche

Tunche is a new beat-em-up and roguelike hybrid with hand-drawn graphics. There are five characters to choose from as you take down foes and bosses in four different worlds. It will also feature A Hat In Time’s creatively named Hat Girl as a special character. As you beat down enemies, you’ll be earning experience for your character and will be gaining new moves.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town seems to be the next best thing to owning a farm. In this game, you plant crops, look after animals, and gain relationships in the community (including dating sim elements). Just like the Animal Crossing series, you’ll be upgrading your environment’s infrastructure and tools by leveling up. You can also unlock new outfits and accessories as you play through the game.

Balan Wonderworld

Led by Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure producer and ChuChu Rocket director Yuji Naka, Balan Wonderworld is a new 3D platformer that transports you into a magical theatrical land. The game’s hook is that there will be over 80 costumes to unlock that all have different moves to utilize. Square Enix claims the setting is “a place where people’s happy and positive memories mix with their restless worries and negativity,” but to be honest, this game looks like a nightmarish dystopia. However, we’re happy it’s bringing back the chao garden from the Sonic Adventure series in some fashion.

Loop Hero

Dungeon crawling, adventuring, and card-based mechanics are all mixed together in this new indie title published by Devolver Digital Loop Hero. As your hero goes on expeditions, you place enemies, buildings, and terrain for their epic quest to help train them towards defeating the Lich and breaking the time loop. You can also expand the survivors’ camp and unlock new classes and cards to increase the hero’s chances of survival. Each loop will be randomly generated, increasing replayability for those who dare take on this evil threat.
