The electronic LEGO Super Mario Bros. set is being updated with a co-op experience, in which two players can adventure in the LEGO world together, one as Mario and the other as Luigi. The dual-player adventure lets players connect LEGO Luigi and LEGO Mario together, in an interactive LEGO experience. Though it seems like a video game, it’s a physical LEGO set with built-in electronics, in which players earn digital coins by performing tasks in classic Mario fashion. Instead of jumping on virtual Goombas or climbing up digital flagpoles, players will have to perform tasks on a constructed LEGO set. Now, LEGO and Nintendo have expanded the gameplay, giving players a chance to earn bonus digital coins by working together.

LEGO Super Mario has previously been a single-player experience after Nintendo only released the red-suited plumber in the initial LEGO sets. In April, however, reports started coming in that LEGO Mario was calling out for his brother, though no one could explain why. LEGO Luigi had not been announced so it seemed like a rather creepy thing for the LEGO figure to do. Then, a few weeks later, leaks revealed an incoming LEGO Luigi, though details on its release were scarce. Originally, the new figure’s release date was set for July 9, but now the co-op LEGO toy won’t be available until August 1.

In a trailer posted to Twitter, Nintendo of America announced that LEGO Luigi would be joining the party, and players would be able to connect the LEGO brothers together for co-op fun. The two-player adventure will reward players with extra coins and LEGO Luigi will arrive at the same time as the Bowser’s Airship Expansion Set. Connecting LEGO Luigi and LEGO Mario together will give players access to a new, interactive experience, as they explore the LEGO courses they build. When playing co-op, players earn bonus digital coins for in-sync actions like flips and jumps. Players can also share extra rewards for defeating enemies and completing challenges while working together.

The LEGO set is bridging the boundary between the virtual playground the real world. Though LEGO has its fair share of video game adaptations, the Super Mario LEGO set is a physical game that must be built before play can resume. The interactive gameplay is certainly unique, and the co-op experience adds new dimensions and challenges to the experience, though it’s unclear how well the LEGO Mario and LEGO Luigi figures will connect.

Players will need to work together and perform in-sync actions to earn rewards. If executed right by LEGO and Nintendo, this can be an engaging way to interact with the physical LEGO pieces and sets. Without proper immersion, though, the LEGO set may literally and figuratively fall apart, turning into a try once and dump toy. Either way, the fact that Luigi is getting his own LEGO figure is a great step for Nintendo, especially since Mario always gets his time in the spotlight.
