Warning! MAJOR SPOILERS for The Walking Dead season 10 episode 13 ahead.

Michonne has appeared in her final episode of The Walking Dead, but where is she going and where might fans see her next? Now in its tenth season, The Walking Dead has seen several major characters come and go. Most notably, its main character, Rick Grimes, exited the show in season 9, but it also lost a mainstay when Maggie Greene left Hilltop.

The Walking Dead season 10 has been largely concerned with the conflict between the survivors and the Whisperers, but recently that conflict appears to have reached a conclusion. In a previous Walking Dead season 10 episode, Negan kills the Whisperers’ leader, Alpha, having apparently been convinced to do so by Carol. It’s still unclear what exactly Negan and Carol agreed upon, but the fact remains that with Alpha gone, the Whisperers are now considerably less of a threat. Of course, with Beta still alive there’s a good likelihood the war isn’t quite over, but even so, killing Alpha is a huge victory for the survivors. In this most recent episode of The Walking Dead, Judith even gets to relay the news to Michonne over their walkie-talkies, and while she’s happy knowing her family and friends are safe, she isn’t going to be home to celebrate.

In The Walking Dead season 10 episode 13, “What We Become,” audiences are finally shown what happens when Michonne travels with Virgil back to the island where a naval base supposedly holds invaluable weapons. Unsurprisingly, the trip doesn’t go as Michonne had hoped, but the episode’s real shock is likely one no one saw coming.

What Happens In Michonne’s Final Walking Dead Episode

Michonne goes on quite the journey in her final episode of The Walking Dead. Having sailed with Virgil for the island where his family is, they arrive to find the naval base abandoned. Very quickly, Michonne begins to suspect something isn’t right, and her suspicions are soon confirmed when she learns Virgil’s family is already dead. The weapons she was promised are also nowhere in sight. Realizing she’s been lied to, things take an even stranger turn when Michonne begins hearing other voices in the compound. When she goes looking for their source, Virgil traps her, locking Michonne in a room overnight.

When she awakens, Michonne learns the truth from the voices – those of the other people who once lived and worked at the naval base with Virgil until he went crazy and locked them up too. As it’s explained to her, Virgil was welcoming to new people, but some of those new people turned out to be no good. One evening a riot broke out, and in the chaos, Virgil locked all the doors to the building – only he didn’t realize his family was still inside. Virgil then serves breakfast to Michonne, only to have him tell her he’s drugged it with a hallucinogenic. She experiences a wild trip in which she’s first visited by Siddiq and then imagines her life as if she had never saved Andrea or met Rick, instead joining up with Negan and the Saviors where she’s seen wielding Lucille.

Once Michonne awakes, she attacks Virgil and manages to get his keys, but as she’s freeing everyone, Virgil runs off and burns their boat. Though incredibly angry, Michonne stills chooses to show Virgil mercy, but demands he give her back her stuff. And as Michonne is collecting her things from a room full of objects Virgil has been hoarding, she sees them – Rick’s cowboy boots, the very pair he’s been wearing since season 1. She demands Virgil show her where he found them, and he leads Michonne to a ship that washed up on the island. Inside, she finds an old smart phone with Rick’s name, illustrations of Judith and her, as well as some Japanese writing engraved into its glass screen. Michonne now knows that Rick is alive.

Michonne later radios Judith, revealing to her and R.J. that the “brave man” might be alive and she’s off to find him. She leaves the island with the others in the repaired ship (Virgil chooses to remain behind), and when Michonne arrives at the mainland, she once again takes two walkers as her chained guards. Looking almost identical to when she first appeared on The Walking Dead, Michonne heads north towards the last destination listed in the ship’s manifest: “New Jersey Shipyard.” On her way, however, she comes across a frightened pair desperate to catch up with their group, and Michonne agrees to help them, remembering her hallucination and what happened when she didn’t help Andrea. As they leave together, it’s revealed the group they’re struggling to reach is a huge procession of hundreds of people marching onward.

Michonne Leaves The Walking Dead… To Find Rick

Michonnes Walking Dead Exit Explained What Happened & What Comes Next

Michonne’s Walking Dead exit isn’t her death as some may have feared, but it does appear this development will permanently remove her character from the main show. Where exactly she’s going at the very end of “What We Become” remains unclear, but her mission is obvious: Michonne is going to find Rick. The only clue she has, though, is the ship’s manifest referring to the New Jersey Shipyard. That in itself isn’t much to go off of, but Michonne is a resourceful survivor, and if any group well-stocked enough to send a ship from New Jersey to Virginia is still hanging around the shipyards, she’ll find them. This is, of course, assuming Michonne doesn’t run into any trouble with the new group, but because this is The Walking Dead, trouble with a new group seems all but guaranteed.

It’s also been six years since Rick was taken away in the helicopter, so there’s no telling when it was in those six years that he was on the ship. Also, if he managed to come this close to Alexandria, why didn’t Rick just go home? The group that took Rick away has since been identified in an episode of Fear The Walking Dead as the Civic Republic Military, and they’re described as a mysterious organization with a mission that’s somehow connected to the future of all humanity. Though their true intentions remain unknown, there’s clearly something ominous about the CRM, and it may be that they’re holding Rick against his will. In which case, if he’s need of a rescue, who better to do that than Michonne? Why the CRM wanted Rick in the first place is another mystery, but it’s one expected to be explored in the upcoming Walking Dead movies, which will likely feature Michonne’s return.

Michonne Could Return In The Walking Dead Movies

There hasn’t been much news about the three planned Walking Dead movies featuring Rick Grimes since their announcement, but it’s understood the movies will cover the time between Rick’s “death” and the present. Andrew Lincoln is reprising his role as Rick and is expected to appear in all three movies. While few concrete details are known, an early teaser for the movies seems to hint they may be set in Philadelphia. If that’s the case, then it wouldn’t be a stretch for Rick to travel from Philadelphia to New Jersey to Virginia at some point across the six-year span. Just where it is he ends up in the present is for Michonne to find out, but even if she does eventually reunite with Rick, it probably won’t be until the third and final Walking Dead movie.

Before The Walking Dead movies come out, there’s yet another spinoff series releasing – The Walking Dead: World Beyond. This series will follow a group of young adults as they embark on a mission outside the safety of their home. The CRM will also play a role in the series, making it possible for World Beyond to lay even more groundwork for the movies about Rick. World Beyond is also only going to run for two seasons, so if its purpose is to help establish the CRM ahead of the Walking Dead movies, it may not be until the spinoff concludes that the first film will release. And unfortunately, World Beyond just had its April release date pushed back.

In that case, it may be a long wait before Michonne returns in a The Walking Dead movie. Because her mission is to find Rick, Michonne can’t appear in the movies at any point during the six-year time span when she believes he’s dead, aside from a flashback or hallucination. And if we assume the movies will tell Rick’s story across those six years chronologically, then Michonne can only really appear in the final movie as it’ll be the one set nearest to the present time of The Walking Dead. Then again, with so little actually known about these Walking Dead movies, it may be that they’ve come up with a story that will reunite Michonne and Rick much sooner, and then reveal his harrowing experiences up until that moment across all three movies. Either way, it’ll be some time before Michonne returns to the world of The Walking Dead, but at least fans now know she’s left for a good reason.
