Call of Duty has a group of incredibly dedicated fans, but sometimes they go a bit too far. One recent example of this extremity deals with the director of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare allegedly receiving death threats for a “fake” game patch. The spark that ignited the incident dates back to the beginning of November when a rumor claimed how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare would receive a large overhaul patch.

This patch was said to be addressing numerous player concerns and wishes, particularly adding red dots onto the minimap -similar to previous titles in the series-. Unfortunately, the rumor turned out to be false and no overhaul came to fruition. The closest patch players received was 1.09 and as a result, many people were not happy with the new. Fans took to the internet and that’s where our story begins.

The more zealous Call of Duty fans stopped at nothing to talk about the rumored patch and how they were given false promises. Infinity Ward soon took to Reddit and addressed these issues, and that is where things took a turn for the worse. In one particular thread, co-design director Joe Cecot stated that sometimes things can be “rough” over at the Modern Warfare subreddit. He wrote that he’d prefer receiving less private messages from people who wish for his children to die “horrible deaths,” ultimately concluding he’d be spending less time there in the future.

While it’s perfectly normal to feel extremely passionate about a video game (especially when one has spent money on it), there’s a certain way to go about offering criticism. Wishing ill will on others, from those directly involved in development to PR agents, is not the best -or brightest- way to do so.

In regards to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s future status, it’s safe to assume that the developers are hard at work trying to make the game enjoyable for everyone. There will no doubt be future patches and updates that will end up fixing some (if not all) of the most-requested issues in the game, even if they get delayed.

Saying that the gaming community can be toxic would be an honest understatement. Not all gamers are toxic people that behave inappropriately, but unfortunately, there is (and always will be) one group that makes everyone else look bad. Whether it’s about live streaming, competitive play, or even game updates, there is always a group of toxic players who are hard to please and who will stop at nothing to ruin the experience for others. Don’t let this example ruin Call of Duty for you.
