The Chunin exams in Naruto are important because, for the first time, many of the ancillary characters come into the spotlight, showcasing their abilities and powers. Filled with some excellent episodes, this arc also showcases some impressive jutsus displayed by the young participants of the exam, allowing fans to gauge their potential and determination.

These include a wide array of each of the three main jutsu types, i.e. ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu. However, while some of these jutsus are cause for amazement, others fail to impress. They should be considered weak because they are either cheap knock-offs of the original, not as developed as they would become in the future episodes of the anime, or quite basic techniques that although useful, cannot be considered powerful.

10 Lion’s Barrage

Sasuke has a considerable arsenal of amazing powers, and Lion’s Barrage, although impressive in its ingenuity, is hardly the most powerful. Sasuke developed this taijutsu combo after having copied the first two moves of Rock Lee’s Front Lotus using his Sharingan and combining it with Shadow of the Dancing Leaf.

He used Lion’s Barrage against Yoroi Akado during the first match of the preliminary. Despite winning the match, this attack is hardly Sasuke’s strongest, and against the original Front Lotus, it pales in comparison.

9 Shadow Senbon

Senbons are thrown simultaneously, with some of them having bells attached to them, while the others remain as they are. The goal of Shadow Senbon is to distract the opponent with the sound of the bells, while the simple senbons hit the opponent.

Kin Tsuchi uses this technique against Shikamaru during the Chunin exams and improvises it further by attaching strings to her senbons. This allows her to generate sound from various directions, further accentuating the attack’s distracting capability. However, it is these strings that eventually result in her defeat, as Shikamaru uses the shadow of the strings to execute his Shadow Imitation Technique. Being extremely simple, and hardly lethal, it is probably one of the weakest, albeit irritating jutsus from the Chunin exams.

8 Transformation Technique

Used by a number of different people during the Chunin exams, the Transformation Technique might be extremely useful but is also an extremely basic technique. The technique can be used to infiltrate, disguise as somebody else, or even confuse opponents.

Naruto uses this technique during his fight with Kiba, forcing the latter to mistakenly attack his own ninken Akamaru. Oboro used it in the Forest of Death to infiltrate Team 7, only to be easily discovered by Sasuke. Consecutively, Naruto uses the same later in the Forest of Death to dupe Team Oboro into revealing their positions.

7 Soft Physique Modification

A trademark of Orochimaru, the Soft Physique Modification is seen to be primarily used by Misumi Tsurugi during the Chunin exams. While this technique can be used to restrict opponents, it is primarily a method used in intelligence gathering.

Allowing the user to extend their body like elastic, this technique can prove to be useful in close combat. However, for an opponent who is constantly moving, or at a distance from the user, the Soft Physique Modification technique is hardly effective. Even in close combat, falling for tricks like a disguised puppet can easily render this jutsu useless, as seen during the battle between Kankuro and Misumi.

6 Rising Twin Dragons

The Rising Twin Dragon involves Tenten placing two scrolls beside her, which rise in the form of a dragon after she has completed the necessary hand signs for the jutsu. As they rise, Tenten jumps and starts procuring weapons from the scroll, throwing them at her opponent in quick succession.

Fans acquainted with Tenten would know that she develops this attack tremendously in the future. However, the iteration she used during the Chunin exams is quite underpowered. This can be witnessed as Temari disperses the weapons with unconcerned ease, and easily defeats Tenten without even suffering a single scratch.

5 Mind-Body Switch Technique

A staple of the Yamanaka clan, this technique is used by Ino Yamanaka during her fight against Sakura Haruno in the Chunin exams. It involves the transference of a person’s consciousness to another person, forcing them to do the caster’s bidding.

Although the Mind-Body Switch goes on to become one of the most powerful techniques at Ino’s disposal, she is still at an early stage of mastering it during the Chunin exams arc. It is for this very reason that Sakura is able to force her way out of Ino’s mind control. Furthermore, the technique requires the opponent to be stationary, as the caster’s consciousness travels in a straight line. If the mark is missed, it takes a while for the caster’s consciousness to return, leaving him/her vulnerable in the meantime.

4 Beast Human Clone

A jutsu typical to the Inuzuka clan, Beast Human Clone can either be performed by the ninken, or by the ninken’s master. During the Chunin exams, it is Akamaru, who uses this technique after being given a food pill. While this attack is useful, preventing opponents from differentiating between the Inuzuka and the ninken; unless used alongside the Four Legs Technique, the façade can soon wear off. The feral tendencies of the animal become visible, therefore, disrupting the whole purpose of the jutsu.

However, when used in combination with the Four Legs Technique, it creates another problem. The senses of the Inuzuka are so heightened, that even something as silly as flatus can disorient the caster, as is witnessed during Kiba’s fight with Naruto.

3 Chakra Absorption Technique

There are various different types of Chakra Absorption Techniques in Naruto. While some ninjas use mediums such as the Wood Release Jutsu, or the Kikaichu insects, others make use of weapons such as the Samehada. Although an extremely powerful attack and equally weakening for the opponent, its usage during the Chunin exams at the hands of Yoroi Akado is quite unimpressive.

Capable of absorbing chakra by simply being able to physically touch the opponent, Yoroi underestimates Sasuke and does not use it as much as he should have. This allows Sasuke enough time to use Lion’s Barrage, decimating Yoroi within minutes.

2 Decapitating Airwaves

When the deadly and mysterious Shino Aburame faces Zaku Abumi in the Chunin exams preliminaries, the inadequacies of Zaku’s Decapitating Airwaves find an immediate spotlight. Capable of generating chakra inside his elbows, Zaku is able to disperse airwaves and sound waves using a pre-installed tube in his arm.

However, his jutsu can soon backfire if these tubes are somehow blocked. Shino uses his Kikaichu insects to achieve the same and as the chakra builds up within the arm, it needs an immediate release. Forbidding this can cause the arm to burst at the seams, as happens during Zaku’s defeat at the hands of Shino.

1 Human Bullet Tank

Similar to Ino, Kiba, and Tenten, Choji does make the Human Bullet Tank extremely lethal as he develops into a better ninja. However, during the Chunin exams, the potency of this jutsu is undoubtedly poor. Consecutively, this jutsu makes it hard to change directions, as is seen when Choji crashes into the wall and gets stuck after Dosu dodges his Human Bullet Tank.

Furthermore, it was a tactical blunder on the part of Choji to even use this technique. Having already known what Dosu was capable of, he should have considered that the water in his body could be used against him if Dosu managed to touch him. Getting stuck in the wall only made this easier for the Sound ninja.
