Annapurna Interactive has announced Neon White, a card-based first-person shooter from Donut County developer Ben Esposito.

With a focus on speedrunning, players must use a variety of different card-based abilities in order to traverse each level and eradicate all enemies in one smooth motion. Cards can be used as weapons to defeat enemies, or discarded in order to use a special acrobatic ability that will help you get around. Play your cards right (no pun intended) and levels can be completed in as little as nine seconds.

Levels in Neon White are meant to be replayed over and over, with each level gradually unlocking more content as you gain experience. You can then post your times onto the game’s global leaderboard to challenge for that number one spot. There are even collectibles that are scattered throughout each level, usually hidden in some hard-to-reach area that will require clever use of cards to reach. These collectibles come in the form of gifts that help deepen your relationships with other characters.

Like in bigger titles such as Persona 5 and the recently released Scarlet Nexus, the game is split into two sections. The first is the gameplay, and the second is a light dating sim where you can get to know the game’s characters, unlock side quests, and discover memories of your past which could possibly affect the game’s ending.

Alongside the core gameplay loop, Neon White also has an interesting story to keep players invested. You play as White, a dead assassin dragged up from Hell who is tasked with eradicating the demon presence from heaven. However, a few other assassins have also been given the same task, and only the fastest assassin will gain the ultimate prize of a permanent place in heaven.

Unfortunately, a specific release date hasn’t yet been announced, but Neon White is expected to drop at some point this winter for Nintendo Switch and Steam. If you’re interested, you can go and wishlist the game on Steam right now.
